First cook with Thermoworks RFX

Put a butt on to smoke with a wireless RFX probe (a little Christmas present from the wife). It worked well until the battery drained. It’s advertised to work for 50+ hours on one charge. It’s been in its charging cradle on the freezer door since Christmas Day. So, I assumed it would be ready to go.
I figured out the problem. I used the cheap battery included from Thermoworks. Big mistake. I popped in a Duracell AAA and charged the probe for 10 minutes, reinserted the probe and finished up the butt.
It’s only 1 use but I’m really impressed with this thermometer. I burned out a lot of wire probes on my Smoke until I started heat shielding the cables with aluminum foil.
The RFX is submersible and can be used for frying and is temperature safe up to 1,000F.
I’m ready for another round. I just have to decide what I want to cook next. I think this is what I’ve been searching for in a leave in.

Good to know. I'm interested in order to do a rotisserie. Smoke has been enough so far for me so haven't pulled the trigger.

I've been using it for a couple of weeks and I love it. The signal is FAR superior to the Meater. This thing is everything that the Meater should be.

What kind of pit do you have? I have an offset and have only had one probe go bad on me between a Smoke and a Signals in the 10 years I have had them.

My meaters are on the way out, was considering this one to replace it.
I think I saw that you still have to have a wired probe to measure the ambient temp. Is that correct?

Yes, although I don’t see how it’s necessary (unless you have a Billows) if you have a good ambient temp thermometer on your lid already.

Lid thermometers are not accurate at gauging the ambient temperature.

Rotisserie is my main interest as well. I do turkey breasts 4 or 5 times a year. Now, I won’t have to keep opening the lid to check temps when they are getting close.

Soul Gleaux, I’ve had most of the problems on my Kamado Joe with the probes. I also had 1 go out on a Weber Kettle but it was an original probe and pretty old.

Yes, you have a wired probe. Hopefully, they’ll come out with a wireless for ambient temp.
