Just got out from seeing it with 7 year old twins (girls). For reference, I absolutely loved Moana. It was damned near magical for me. The ocean has always held a special place for me and that just played into it.

This sequel definitely did not capture that kind of magic. I think it'll be a success, but it's not going to be a billion dollar film by any stretch. People aren't going to go back for it.

A few specific observations:

1.) The soundtrack was enjoyable but not memorable like every song in the original. Maui's solo piece was absolutely forgettable.

2.) Dwayne Johnson stuck out way too much as The Rock. It was way, way too easy to get sucked out of the moment every time he had a line.

3.) It felt like the director made a concentrated effort to lean into Maori and Samoan culture this time rather than relatively Americanizing it like in the original. By the end I found I appreciated it.

4.) Other than the two figs they threw in for absolutely no reason, it wasn't that woke. Just joking - there was absolutely nothing woke about the movie. It was quite pleasant

5.) Loved Little Sister. That was a really great relationship they threw in there.

6.) The old man is my fricking spirit animal

7.) Trailer Park Pua may be my favorite new animal.

All in all we all really enjoyed it. The girls absolutely loved it. It was a good serve by Disney.

Not sure I understand or buy the 'message' of Moana 2. She's trying to unite all the island peoples? Ok, but why? Just because they're island people? What if some don't want to be united? What if that's why they left in the 1st place, to go do their own thing?

IDK, seems pretty flimsy but I suppose the movie has some sort of answers.

I'm guessing she read into the prophecy from the original wayfinder that her village would whither away and cease to exist unless they broke the curse and fixed it. The supernatural element has been well established so it fits as good as anything else.

It held serve but definitely didn’t win many points. None of the songs were memorable like in the original. I definitely will not be bringing the kids back to see it again. Inside Out 2 >>>>

Saw it last night and it was just OK. None of the songs were memorable and besides Maui and the side characters, I was bored.

Inside Out 2 was better and The Wild Robot is far and beyond the best animated movie of the year.

To be fair, this is the problem with every single movie (live-action or animated) that he is in... he's not acting, he's just being The Rock.

Not a problem in the original Moana, he was perfect as Maui

It felt a little rushed to me, but it was enjoyable. Little sis pulled those heart strings

I thought the soundtrack sucked, the movie overall was pretty good.

I did think it was interesting how they haven’t met other people for supposedly a thousand years yet the girl who built the boats had an Australian or South African accent

I saw it tonight with the family. It was ok, it reminded me of when Disney would just release sequels straight to video, suddenly there is a Little Mermaid sequel or a Lion King sequel and you would watch them and then forget them.

They should've dropped the bag and gotten Lin Manuel Miranda to write the songs. None of these songs are instantly memorable the way You're Welcome or Shiny was from the original.

It was a kids tv series turned into a movie. Well animated but the story & songs are weak & repetitive. 4/10

Found myself in dad-mode. At the end, I said…How is that island going to support all these new people? War incoming.

Compared to the original, this one gets a 4/10 for me. On its own, maybe a 5.5/10.

I also thought it looked like Moana got lip fillers compared to the first movie

This aggravated me.

The old farmer was a good character.

My girls liked it.

ETA…I caught it at clearview amc. I bought a $7 soft drink. This should be illegal on many levels.

I usually go to canal place and don’t think it’s nearly as pricey.

Saw it tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Storyline was solid. Soundtrack not nearly as good as the original.

Little 'sis was absolutely adorable. As a girl dad that got in my feels.

If you stayed till the credits rolled, they had a bonus scene where they set the stage for a 3rd one.

ETA: Moana is also a demigod now it appears.

It's been a long "opening weekend" but it's on pace to break $300M worldwide. Maybe it will get close to a cool B by the end of its run.

I don't think she was brining them to live on their island unless I just tuned out and missed it. I think the island they brought up from the sea was like a meeting place that was lost to them. Basically the was establishing trade routes. Again, unless I missed it.

I really enjoyed it. I didn’t care much for the songs but I enjoyed the storyline and thought the little sister was a great addition.
