Do you consider Mandeville a “suburb” of NOLA?

I’ve never understood when people say that Mandeville is a suburb of New Orleans. I mean, there is a lake in between the two places. I guess it just depends on one’s interpretation of “suburb”. What do you think?

Suburb has an actual definition. Mandeville no longer meets the definition of being a suburb of New Orleans. It used to be

Yes. It’s only 25 miles away

I think so because a lot of people commute to Nola everyday for work

It is unfortunately… Just look population size and demographics before the causeway opened.

This is exactly the opposite of the reality. Covington and Mandeville used to be in "the country" and were not looked upon as part of the Metropolitan area of New Orleans. That changed after Katrina specifically. The newspapers and television stations opened up bureaus on the northshore because of the diaspora that Katrina caused. They are now more a part of the Metro populace than ever before.

No. Mandeville is no longer a suburb of New Orleans because it has fallen under the 25% daily commuter threshold
For the first time it was taken out of the Nola MSA

Not opinions or feelings, facts

It’s nothing crossing the Causeway now. It used to be an adventure.
Was Katrina the inflection point or the Causeway upping the speed limit from 55?
Through the 90s (especially early 90s), the Northshore was completely different entity from NO with very little cross pollination aside from a few vanpools crossing the bridge. Kids on the northshore thought the world ended at the shore of the lake.

In the 90s mandeville had over a 50% commuter rating to Nola. Under 20% now

The Northshore people sure do hate NOLA, but at the same time get upset if they don't get called a NOLA suburb?

It's pretty far away to be considered a suburb to me. Damn near an hour drive in light traffic. It's almost as far as Hammond is from New Orleans.

Feelings don’t matter. Work from home, shift away from Nola for companies , etc has changed its commuting habits of people
Mandeville no longer meets the threshold of being in the Nola MSA and being a suburb

There are suburbs in the northeast that take well over an hour to get to because loads of people commute in for work daily.

you could place the state of Connecticut over the DFW metroplex and it wouldn't cover it, every place is considered a 'burb

Wait until you find out about Houston’s largest suburb, which is called The Woodlands .. only difference is that NOLA and M’ville have a lake between them , distance wise they are actually closer .
