Getting impossible to shield kids

My kids are 10, 8, 4 and in the past few months it's been a barrage of stuff we try to keep them out of.
What is it when you're gay?
Why did they try to shoot trump?
Was there a school shooting?
Can you change into a boy/girl?
Watching the Bengals game today and commercial comes on for local news talking about a murder where a woman was shot in the head.
Crazy father in law calls and starts blabbering about how we're headed for Marxism and we need to prepare and stockpile food and such. Kids overheard in the vehicle before we could get it off the car speakers.
I was prepared for where do babies come from and shite like that but damn it seems like way too much is being thrown in our kids faces every day. We control as much as we can but it feels like a losing battle between school, TV, other kids who don't have parents that censor.
Am I being helicopter by trying to screen this shite?

I don't disagree with some level of preparedness, he basically told my wife to liquidate our bank accounts, buy gold and silver, and start freeze drying food today. Like full economic collapse was happening this week.

Teach them young.
Boys have a penis.
Girls have a vagina.

I miss the good ol days when all kids had to fear was conjuring Satan by playing an Ozzy record backwards on a Fisher-Price record player.

Or we would be kidnapped by devil worshippers walking home from school

My brother's grandkids are homeschooled. I am a certified teacher and chose faith based materials for their parents to use. The kids are involved in church activities with parents and church teachers working together to make sure that the kids have a solid religious foundation. Access to the internet is monitored. There are lots of sports and outdoor playtime so TV watching is kept to a minimum. There is no way to completely shield kids but you can reduce exposure to attempts to indoctrinate them.

Bringing kids into this world in 2024, maybe not the smartest thing to do.. But if you do, then you know the type of world you are bringing them into, so you can’t act surprised when it’s extremely, extremely challenging .

Best advice I can give you from all of that is...
listen to what your FIL said. He is not crazy, he is observant.

Forget the kids, you need to take away your FILs phone and internet.

Get your kids out of govt schools and off screens entirely.

All of you act like we didn't deal with this shite in the 80s/90s.

This is BS.. when i was a little kid the 1980s, we lived with the constant threat and fear of nuclear annihilation.. it caused a ton of anxiety, i know i cant be the only one here who felt it .

The screen time they do get is limited and activity is monitored, syncs to our phones. Outside of things like watching a football game with me today, they are not consuming this information from their screen time at home.
As an example, our 10 year old checked out an audio book from her school library. It had frick and shite in the book. She has 100% heard it at home, but I feel like that's pretty bad coming from school

None here want to remember the 80s unless it's to talk about the cool stuff. Gas lines, double digit interest rates, severe recession, insane inflation percentages, you name it. We had it. But it was fun, besides the our parents being worried sick parts.
