The Southeastern Conference finally has a football tiebreaker format for its new 16-team era.
The SEC on Wednesday afternoon announced the steps it will use to determine the teams for its football championship game, if necessary.
The tiebreakers will be as follows:
1. Head-to-head competition among the tied teams.
2. Record vs. all common SEC opponents among the tied teams.
3. Record against the highest (best) placed common SEC opponent in the conference standings, proceeding through the SEC standings among the tied teams.
4. Cumulative SEC winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams.
5. Capped relative total scoring margin vs. all SEC opponents among the tied teams.
6. Random draw.

I thought to break ties, the SEC would just throw darts.

The real tiebreaker is a phone poll of the REC board of directors.

#6
It has to go to random at some point. The old tiebreak procedure ended with a coin flip as well.
On a side note, I would like to point out my prediction from the previous thread:

But I would guess it’ll look something like:
1) Number of head-to-head wins among tied teams
2) Record against common SEC opponents
3) Record against the common SEC opponent(s) with best record
4) Conference record of SEC opponents
5) Coin flip
I was pretty close! Only thing I missed was get the “relative total scoring margin” from the actual tiebreaker #5.

I thought it was "keep dicking around and just let Bama in"

It’s gonna be a shitshow if there are like 4 or more teams all tied for first with the same record. If that is even possible.

Only exception would be if Alabama is one of teams. They are in, regardless. The tiebreaker rules would only apply to the other tied teams to determine who they will play.

The relative total scoring margin will be determined by a formula that involves a team’s offensive and defensive scoring averages relative to its actual scores against SEC teams. A team’s formula will include a cap of 42 points scored on offense and 48 points allowed on defense.

The conference is still without a permanent football scheduling format. The SEC will continue with eight games this season and at least in 2025, with home-and-away opponents for 2024 being flipped for next season.

It'll still be the random draw, they will just somehow always be one of the two randomly drawn

Championship game is played for TV contract and the revenue.
In my opinion… the conference champion or co-champions should be awarded to the team(s) with the best conference season record.
Eliminate the Conference Championship game and focus on the Playoffs.

#3 seems unnecessary. It is choosing good wins over bad losses which, in my mind are of equal importance.
Imagine LSU and Texas are tied. We get to #3 above. They have each beaten the same common opponents but flipped Bama and Vanderbilt.
So LSU loses to Alabama on the road by 3 but beats Vanderbilt by 50. Texas beats Alabama by 3 at home but also loses to Vanderbilt at home. Texas is in.
Just go from record against common SEC opponents to win % against all SEC opponents. #3 is unnecessary.

Running up scores here we come. It would have been easier to keep the East and West divisions, and the two champs play in SECC game in ATL.

What about the ESPN "Eye Test"?
