Faulkner

She didn't pick up cycling until 2017 and wasn't even supposed to be doing the road race, only to get added a week before and left everyone in her dust.

And then won another gold on the velodrome.

There are so many that I can point out I mean like Katie ladecki Simone biles so many others are men's relay teen men's track 4 / 400 and women's 4 / 400 Gabby Thomas gold on and on but for me it has to be the digging deep by Cole Hocker what a run And winning a gold medal that was so unexpected

As far as dominating the competition goes:

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone

Runner-up: Katie Ledecky

I mentioned it in another thread but Scottie shooting a 62 in the final round to claim gold was pretty clutch

Hocker. Set the tone for T&F dominance and long distance resurgence.

Rai Benjamin

Defeated his nemesis and stepped in for Quincy Hall to anchor the 4x400 and held off Tebogo for Gold

Ilona Maher/USA Women's rugby

One of the single greatest last-second victories in sports if you think about rugby and how highly unlikely it was to make a play like that from where it was made I realized she's not the one who scored the goal

but her pure unadulterated enthusiasm for the moment and the experience, plus shes a leader of the team

She is a female athlete who embraces her femininity as it is.
And understands that women are not cartoon characters of feminine stereotypes. That some women and too many men cosplay at these days

I want to say a true amateur but I have no idea which US amateur did the best job because I don't know any off hand that are amateurs. The only one I am not sure is/has been a prfessional listed so far is Huske.

Does anyone know a US gold medal winner or someone with a great performance that is not a pro?

Relenting to the fact there may not be an amatuer it is probably Faulkner to me. (being a cyclist probably taints me). She won both on the road and in the velodrome and her win on the road was amazing for not only who she beat but how she beat them.

Outside of her it would be Lebron and Curry in the co-MVP role. Their combined play in the Serbian and French games was epic. Two guys north of 35 dragging their team to a gold medal with all the world watching, much of it seething. Millions (maybe billions) of underdog fans and haters of America would have loved to see them faulter but two guys with one foot in an assisted living home just wouldn't let it happen. Steph was fairly quiet for the first few games and showed up right when it was needed. Love or hate Lebron but he played every game like it was game seven. I don't think I have ever seen him that foused over that many games in his entore career.

Hocker got the whole thing going, but I'll say Gabby or Steph.
