Full Story - F150
Does anyone want to let this guy in on the cost of replacement batteries?

His Ford F-150 Lightning truck is not an average pickup truck, but more like a personal power plant.

Once Foreman got the truck, Sunrun installed a home integration system that allowed him to use the truck to power his home during a grid power outage.

It’s so hot now I’d have to be in the truck revving it up to keep the ac going.

What happens when his truck battery dies and the power's still not back on? Can't put more gas in it like a generator, and can't charge the truck battery because well the power's out. So now you have no power AND no transportation.

Can we not just sit back, avoid pointing out the inevitable problems, and think “that’s pretty neat”?

Thomas Massie powers his home with an old Tesla car battery

One of my neighbors has a Lightning and they would run out and charge it then plug is back in to run the fridge and a small a/c in their bedroom after the derecho in May.
ETA this is more about VPP than running when the grid is down.

There’s decent income from VPP programs. And they usually don’t cycle the batteries very hard and you only commit a certain amount to export.
Also this guy has solar on his house so he can charge from that.

What is he gonna do when the battery runs out? Get a gas generator to charge it?

Actually, we can’t.
The absurdity of relying on electric motor vehicles when all we have heard are the following is absurd:
1) Power grid: The US power grid is fragile and antiquated. The Feds haven’t allowed a new power grid to be built in decades.
2) Electromagnetic pulse set off by China or Russia would decimate the US power grid.
If there is no power how is someone supposed to use these modern marvels?
Sorry, I don’t get excited about my house running on batteries powered by my electric car.
Really, who give a shite.
Tell me where EV use has a net positive on your life or the “planet”.
It’s nothing more than new technology that is being rammed into our assholes with no thought to the following:
1) practicality
2) economically- cost to transition to
3) jobs that would be lost if the Dem filth got their way and shut down the use and exploration of oil and and Nat gas
4) National Security
Nope sorry I don’t get my dick hard because someone can now power their house by an EV.

Baws. Rigging shite since 1718.

Stupid. Could buy an actual solar generator and a real truck and do the same thing

He already has a real solar setup. He’s basically using the truck battery just like a home battery and he’s getting paid for it.

Can't wait to see the Scotty Kilmer video on this

Feels like a gimmick. They could just get a home battery setup if they are so worried about the grid.

This actually has nothing to do with running off grid although the system would be capable of it. This is about using EV batteries for grid support through a virtual power plant program. He’s basically using the car battery as a home energy storage system as well. This has been coming for a while now and it’s good to see the utilities finally getting cool with it.

What? Why couldn't it be a battery bank instead of an EV.
Seems the term "power plant" is being used very generously here.
It reads like a Ford advertisement.

It can be any battery pack as long as it’s controlled by a utility approved unit and properly enrolled.
quote:in this case since it’s powered by solar I think it’s appropriate but generally the VPP term is bizarre for storage only.

Actually has nothing to do with Ford other than that they ship the lightning with export capability from the factory. It’s almost certainly controlled by a SolarEdge inverter. I don’t believe Ford is on anyone’s approved vendor list for this.

I'm just saying this feels like a Ford ad. Look at all the brand shots in this video. He said they owned Teslas but this news pieces doesn't say it is possible with those EVs.

What is powered by solar? How does that relate to using a Ford 150 Lightning™ as an energy store.

Because many EV companies haven’t enabled export ability. Tesla for example has programmatically prohibited it. They don’t want to dilute PowerWall sales.
quote:His truck is. He could probably charge from grid or solar but he definitely has a PV system and that’s what actually doing all the grid service control.

It is kinda funny that Ford is getting top billing on this when it’s really a SunRun project.

Ok, so his truck has to stay plugged in from when he gets home at 5pm to 9pm as a generator (from the article) and then plugged in all night to recharge the batteries via solar?
I'd rather have a dedicated battery bank.
