At what amount do you start to think of somewhere else to put cash? 75k? 100k? 200k?

Money sitting in your checking account is wasted opportunity cost. It all depends on your situation. I follow the 50/30/20 rule to a certain extent.

As little as possible. We keep the bulk of our "cash" in high yield savings, ibonds, and a money market account. It's working for me in those areas where as checking it's doing nothing. If I have to move some cash into checking I can do it easily from the HYSA and move on.

A shitload less in checking. Get a correlating HYSA and just transfer money over to checking when needed. Capital one has it super easy and it’s over 4 percent. No point in keeping a lot in checking, that’s idiotic.

Honest question...why in the world would you keep 75K in a checking account? Unless you had an IMMEDIATE very short term need like you were buying a house tomorrow I dont' really see what you'd have to gain by doing that.

Don’t really have an answer. Probably have close to 200k in checking. Need to look into HYSA or something else. That’s why I was asking to see what other options were out there.

Usually when I get to this amount I just buy another rental property and I may do that again but open to other options.

you can easily setup a brokerage account and put it in a MMF paying over 5%. it is fool proof.

can transfer anytime back to checking as needed.

well, i have around 341k in two checking accounts myself right now.

one for business and one for personal. just sold some land but i am about to move it the hell out and get it to my MMF paying 5.2%.

NFW am i leaving any substantial amounts in my personal checking. business is different because i have to run payroll and make 401k contributions with that balance. Cannot drain that account until i see what my dividend distribution will be on my K-1 at year's end.

Checking (called Cash Management) through Fidelity still earns 4.9% through FDLXX or a similar money market fund.

It's truly a great setup, as none of the cash sits idle. All withdrawls from the money market fund are done automatically.

Way too easy to move/manage funds between checking and hysa or something else to keep anything remotely as much as that in checking unless you just like to feel strong when you check your balance ;). I think my hysa says 3-5 day for transfers and it’s usually there the next day.

My checking account ranges around $10,000 +/- $5000. Why would you want that much in there?

I only keep in my checking account what I need to pay bills for the next two weeks, plus an extra $20 for unexpected expenses, plus any remainder under $5.
