Any suggestions for must have items? Not sure how much hiking we are doing, but wonder if we need good hiking shoes? We are doing a whale watching tour, a train ride in Skagway, I think a glacier tour at some point, but could be wrong. Also going halibut fishing at one stop. Appreciate any advice.

It's obvious but I'll say it anyway...a really good rain jacket and a really good waterproof backpack.

This blog post is a year old but still rings true.

I have been on two Holland America Alaskan cruises and did similar things. The long train ride to the Yukon Territory from Skagway. Whales watching and Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. Sounds like you have it covered. The scenery is spectacular.

Late July is a good time to come. Fireweed will be blooming and the salmon runs are in peak, here in the Southeast.

it could be in the 40s and raining, or 70 and hot. 70 is hot here.

Roger, I’m about to pull the trigger on a cruise in late May. How are things that time of year?

We went in July and some of the excursions we booked were on water and so glad we decided to bring our NF jackets as it was a cold summer otherwise. Enjoy.

Bring a good set of binoculars for whale watching. Huge difference.

Good. Usually when the weather is best. Rent a car in Juneau if you can and drive out the road, bears feast on dandelions roadside.

Been to Alaska twice, some recs for excursions
Juneau. Above and beyond Alaska canoe trip and Glacier trek. Rum runner charter for fishing/whalewatching. Day trip to Tracy Arm-prettiest place I’ve ever seen

Haines- not a ton to do but Eagle reserve float trip was fun

Ketchikan- did a fishing trip here, beautiful scenery caught about 12 silver salmon in July.

Planning on going in the next year, watching lots of YouTube videos. I’ve seen several people suggest waterproofing shoes instead of getting boots.

Just a note on in-port shopping. Most shops close to cruise-ship docks are actually owned by the cruise companies. They seasonally shift the merchandise between Alaska and the Carribean. Anything sold as craftwork probably comes from Asia.

That said, stroll away from the docks looking for shops that display signs indicating local ownership, especially a local craftwork co-op. Thrift shops, bookstores and hardware stores are worth a look. When you find a legitimate local store, ask about shops and craftsmen studio's within walking distance.

They do some pretty cool things, more adventure oriented. Its a good company to go to Pack Creek with, if you want to see Brown Bears.

Pack Creek is a unique experience.

Plenty of great videos on YouTube. Emma Cruises (British gal cruise agent who just posted some from recent Alaskan cruise): Life Well Cruised also has some great tips; Let's Go Travel Tips also has some great info, think some specific to Alaska. Have a great trip!

Did you get to keep your fish?

I’d like to do a fishing trip in Ketchikan but we’ll only be there from 7am to 1:15 pm
