re: Clark: Pels open to BI extension, but not at max

The issue with extending BI is obviously Trey. It's clear he wants to start. Will he want to be here if BI is here long term?

I think we were kind of seeing it before he got hurt. But when he came back not so much.
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. The parts of BI's game that most of you all hate are 100% part of being asked to play lead guard. When he came back, Zion got hurt and he was asked yet again to shift to point-Ingram.

Trey needs to earn a starting spot with consistent effort and mentality.

Trey ain't ever going to overtake BI or Zion if they are here long term. And he knows that.

The problem with adding a guy like Jones is you're basically shelving Jose and Daniels at the PG position
I don't see the problem. Jose is what Jose is. Dyson, on the other hand, is a very versatile piece, particularly if he can clean up his outside shot (drop the damn off foot, Dyson). The guy can guard 1-5. I just don't see him being a PG or bust situation

Guarding isn’t the problem with him. It seems to be finding an offensive spot for him given his current limitations.

35 million isn't super low for a 1 time all star.
Considering his age and contract tier, that's low

Dyson isn't a point guard
Jose isn't playable in the playoffs
Dyson has to take a HUGE leap next year to project as serviceable. He's much closer to bust status.

That’s one guy.
There aren’t many “Real PGs” in the NBA anymore.

I don’t see how they can keep both Bi and Trey. Both are starters and both are natural SF. I have a feeling we end up trading BI for rotation pieces and possibly a couple draft picks. I’m not sold that Grif will find a trade for him that brings us back either a true starting g PG or an upgrade to Jonas.

This real PG talk is so annoying. Name these real PGs?
Haliburton, Maxie, and Connely come to mind, honestly Jrue could have worked.. Obviously there is a cost. But a real Point (no designation on being a guard, forward, or center) dictates pace offensively and defensively, has elite ball handling, distributes the ball on-time, and preferably can shoot above the arc and have a little length.. It's also the most demanding position, from a conditioning perspective, on a basketball team. Pels had no one that checked all the boxes.
Outcome the past 3 seasons is why were BI and Zion scoring less than 50 points a game? That didn't rank up with any of the top duos. That number always should have been closer to 60 points. This was under both Coaches SVG and WG, although it continued to slide under Coach Green. I believe having BI and operate as full-time primary ballhandlers takes away from their effectiveness as scorers/finishers. Just my 2 cents.

Three of the final four teams in the playoffs have "real" PG's that can run an offense, control the tempo, and get their best players open shots. Especially in clutch time when you need to execute at a high level
Murray
Conley
Haliburton

Is there a realistic number that you’d guys wouldn’t mind keeping him on?

35 million per year max
Pay him right under what Zion makes
So basically a 4/140 extension is what I would offer
He's not going to change his shot profile. He's not going to commit to Zion being the guy, and when he doesn't, Willie is likely to appease him and go back to making Zion take the back seat again so BI can be the guy. Just because Zion was the #1 dude after the All Star break doesn't mean BI will be happy with it for 4 more seasons, I'd argue he 100% won't. And then what... If Willie is here, then you get BI as your #1 and Zion #2. If a coach who will stand up to BI is here, then you still need to trade him then, so why not just do it now?
We've also shown over the last 2 seasons that we can be even better when he doesn't play, albeit very close, so at worst, we've been no better when he plays.

quote:This is false for a bunch of reasons.
There’s absolutely no downside to it
If it fails, every year you kept him is a failed year.
You commit to never learning Trey's true value, and he'll always just be an ok role player. We'll never know if he can be a high level player, once the extension is signed Trey is screwed.
We also lose the ability to make a trade now to get the head start on the future.
Just too many reasons to not keep him. We know it won't work, so the realistic dollar amount is irrelevant.

quote:Problem is, if we keep BI we absolutely cannot swap CJ out for yet another non volume shooter.
There’s one available in FA if we want to grab him. tyus jones who won’t cost a lot.
12ppg on 49% shooting with 7.3 assists with the wizards. Also shot 40% on 3s with 4 attempts per game.
Surrounding Zion with 4 non volume 3pt shooters in the starting lineup would be such a terrible idea.

From the fan perspective it makes a lot of sense but will the front office feel the same way?
Absolutely this. We should only trade for a PG if the guy is a bonafide star.

I wonder if this signing BI to smaller extension is basically just leverage for trade talks so other teams don’t think we HAVE to get rid of him even though I think we HAVE to get rid of him.
Remember Griffin basically said he wanted to keep AD before trading him.

With Dyson, I think it's pretty obvious he'll never be a true point guard. It's not just that he's not good at the things that would make a good offensive point guard and can improve on them, it's that his entire game is basically anti true point guard.
