Would you prefer an Elite offense or an Elite defense

If could only have one.

I would definitely say an Elite offense. You are never out of the game. We have had both in the not so distant past and nothing is more frustrating than a defense setting the tone and dominating, only to see an inept offense go three and out 8 times per half

Elite defense can change a game. Create fumbles, interceptions, sacks. Look at les miles. Had great defenses and couldn't get a quarterback that threw more than two hundred yards except mettenburger. But still won 10 games and one natty.

Remember when they used to say offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. No longer the case imho fwiw tbh.

The only right answer is offense in 2024. You aren't shutting anyone out anymore and 2019 was a very clear indicator of that. Most here will say defense because of nostalgia.
Those same folks see absolutely no issue beating sun belt teams 10-7 and they're blown away when you can't even pick up a first down against higher level competition.
Nobody wants to watch a QB throw for 80 yards.

This is 100% spot on. Close the thread.

Elite offense. With elite defense under miles we kept convincing ourselves we could pull a w out. OK get a stop here and a drive and we are in it. Only to go 3 and out again. It was a slow death. Last year, damn offense didn't score a td here game over. At least this way the pain was over quick lol.

2. The last time LSU won 10 games under Miles, we had the best passing offense in school history.
3. When Les Miles won a national championship, LSU had an innovative offense based out of the spread with two quarterbacks who could hurt you with their legs and arm, 3 NFL wide receivers, an NFL running back, an NFL full back, 3 NFL offensive lineman, and an NFL tight end.
The 2011 team was a top 20 scoring offense with NFL stars all over the field on offense.
This idea that LSU was competitive with "just a strong defense" under Miles is false. When Miles had bad offenses (2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016) LSU was a bad football team.

I guess it depends on the other side of the ball.
If one side of the ball sucks in this scenario, give me the elite offense and gives us a chance to win regardless of the defense.
That said, my ideal would be an ELITE defense with a good but not necessarily elite offense.

Offense
It is still more fun to me as a fan being able to score than not.

If I could only have one of the two and there is no 3rd option I’m taking elite offense at least we always have a chance….
If I can pick option C then I’m picking an more balanced offense defense combo

Offense
2019 defense was nowhere near elite and is arguably the greatest team ever

with an elite defense, you can bully the other team, and that's really fun. just my opinion.

2011 Elite Defense.
2019 Elite Offense.

Wasn't elite but it had nfl talent at every level.

Well 2016 had an elite defense and no offense and we went 9-4. This past year we had an elite offense and no defense and we went 10-3 and had a Heisman winner so I think I choose offense. Both are frustrating and cost you games but I agree with the other poster that having an elite offense means you’re never out of the game.

Elite offense. You know why, because you didn't say the defense couldn't be good lol.
Michigan is an extreme outlier. Michigan kept guys around for 4+ years and was able to conserve their team by playing tons of trash teams all season long. When you play 2 good teams all regular season (neither one with a good offense AT ALL), and one with an overrated defense, it makes the postseason less daunting.
A top 5 offense with a top 30 defense is good enough to win the national championship.

quote:Yeah LSU had a historically bad defense, and that was the problem. Even a top 75 defense we beat Bama and Ole Miss and possibly make the playoffs.
