Do like Florida did. Hand out the rules. Explain the consequence For breaking the rules
The rules get enforced.
All said rules only relate to where you can protest and what you can do. Not what you say.
Arrest the frick out of the rule breakers.

According to Abbott’s tweet, they would be arrested for antisemitism.
Abbott’s recently signed executive order indeed grants college authorities the power to specifically target students who practice “antisemitic speech.”

They were arrested for not following lawful orders to disperse.
They were arrested for lots of reasons.
They deserved to be arrested for the above reasons and more.
And as indicated by Thunder above, I don’t think anyone in this thread is arguing that violence and harassment have anything to do with free speech rights. If anyone IS arguing for that case, they are wrong.

The problem is not hate speech but actionable hate speech.
Theres a big difference between saying "Free Palestine" and "We are going to erase you, your family, and your culture from your lands like we did on October 7th".
The Hamas supporters at these universities don't know the difference nor do their financial backers care.

That's where the political winds blew him. To be expected.
Appeasement seems to be his MO. Definitely not a fan of his. Especially if we needed someone with cajones to lead us into what will be needed one day.

What is so difficult to understand about "free speech" versus threatening diatribes at anyone who comes close to them???
Dont mask verbal intimidation as "free speech nonsense".
Your rights end when they infringe on others plain and simple.

I agree. Abbott is an idiot. He’s in it for the money. Has been in Texas politics for years and only decided to care about the problem with the illegal immigration once he figured out it could make him loads of cash.

wait - I thought there were actual laws that make hate speech a crime.
hell, there are certain words you cannot even say - regardless of intent or context.

There is the rub — determining what constitutes “hate speech” and an actual threat of violence. Many have argued that chanting “From the River to the Sea!” is a veiled threat of genocide against Jewish people.
These claims ignore the fact that this phrase has also been used by Israeli politicians to define the territorial sovereignty of Israel. Indeed, the original charter of the Likud Party states: “…between the sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty.”

It is worse than that: as discussed recently on this forum, it appears some of these useful college-age tools have no idea exactly what or who they are protesting. And we further have documented proof that radical progressive organizations — if not terror front groups — are funding these supposed “organic” protests.
Just to be clear, in no way should my criticism of Abbott be read as an endorsement of these nefarious entities. The concern here is that any attempt to criminalize “hate” speech — whether by the left or right — can and will be used to quell genuine political opposition to the agenda of the permanent bipartisan reigning regime in Washington D.C.

There is no hate speech. No gender affirming care. No assault weapons.
Every time we use the language of the Left, they win. They've moved the Overton window in their favor.
It's pathetic to see those on our side bend the knee to the language nazis and them thinking that they're "relating" to the public. They aren't.

I agree with OP but Abbott isn’t having APD arrest people because of what they are chanting but for remaining after being told to leave.
His word choices were poor in this instance.

I agree. I must admit that a few years ago even I thought there were, "hate speech" laws. I had to educate myself about the law.
Abbot, is a globalist shill. He only gets a pass because he's in a wheel chair and ticks the Republican check box.
But yeah, I hate these protestors for blocking traffic and their nuisance behavior, but they have the right to be as "hateful" as they want to be.

Huffines for governor.

Abbott messed up in conflating two issues. He can personally condemn what he deems hate speech but can't and shouldn't have anyone arrested for it. However, campus protestors that get out of hand for any reason absolutely should be arrested, and I'm glad to see it happen. If he had the foresight to separate these two thoughts he'd be in a much better place right now.
Pretty much all that needs to be said and you lose the message pretty quickly when you start complaining about simply speech.

Again, Abbott has done more than picked words poorly. Abbott issued an executive order that specifically allows universities to target “antisemitic” speech:
Include the definition of antisemitism, adopted by the State of Texas in Section 448.001 of the Texas Government Code, in university free speech policies to guide university personnel and students on what constitutes antisemitic speech.
The Texas code on “antisemitic” speech is so broadly worded that it can and will be used to quell legitimate criticism of the Israeli state.
• Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
• Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/antisemitism
Anyone who denies this is denying how the autocrats in both parties operate when countering political opposition.

Yet yelling fire in a crowded room will get your head busted .....
Michigan had their commencement interrupted yesterday. The protestors should been dragged out beaten and taken to an empty stadium. Hire a few judges to come in and decide what to charge them with and lock them up. Tell Mommy and Daddy where to pay the fines ....If they are not students .....find a jail for them and who is paying them.
Too many outside influences
Blocking traffic is unlawful ......quit giving this to Judges and DA's that don't enforce laws ......Have a Judge or two with their feet on the desk waiting to be called.
Democrats are already preparing to issue permits for the right to protest in Chicago. To hell with the rest of the nation

Does Abbott actually stand with Israel? I’d like to see it.

So we shouldn't hold lefties to the standards they hold us to?
Keep in mind, these are the same universities that deemed asking someone where they're from as a micro aggression that could result in disciplinary behavior.

Progressives have already created the laws/framework for this. Why wouldn't conservatives wield that weapon against them?
