University of Florida? Then get him some jorts so he'll fit in.

Put whatever money you were going to spend on a watch in an index fund in his name. He can use the money for a down payment on a house when he gets out of school.

If jorts are not a consideration, then a nice pen or a pen and pencil set would be appropriate. Not cost prohibitive, he can use it at school, and it would be a nice thing that no college student would actually buy for himself.

I’d like to buy him a graduation gift that he will keep for life. I suggested a nice watch. Maybe a TAG or even a Breitling
Don’t get him a Tag. The polish wore off that turd fifteen years ago.
I’d also suggest a Kurono Tokyo. The Japanese have surpassed the Swiss in finishes and movements. They always won the arms battle when it came to dials. It is pretty unlikely that he will run across someone else with a Kurono.
I also like German watches better than most Swiss Brands though they all use Swiss movements. I can highly recommend Circula. The price is right on those as well but if you’re spending a pretty good amount, there are some great brands. Dornbluth and Sohne for example, beautiful watches and it isn’t just another Rolex.

Nice pocket knife. Can also get it engraved if you choose to.

I had an uncle get me a nice set of luggage for traveling.
Out of all the graduation gifts, that has been the most useful.

same boat here....
OP I'd get the Tag watch if thats what you want to spend your money on. Its your money and your gift, and only you know what the kid might like.
My HS senior's school opted to tradition of watches instead of graduation rings because the watch will get worn more than the ring. My son loves his and wears it daily.
Other great options:
Leather wallet with initials (still have and use mine from HS graduation over 25 years ago)
Leather engraved luggage
Engraved cuff links
Engraved pocket knife
Shotgun or pistol if he's into that
Any of the above would be a keep sake that he should have most of his life.

This.
My dad gave me a .308 when I graduated. 17 years later I'm still using it.

My dad gave me a TAG when I went off to LSU a long time ago. Still have it and it is very important to me.
A nice watch is like a glass of scotch. It goes with everything - you can have one at a funeral and it's still classy.

Go open up an IRA for him. Deposit some money…$1,000 - $2,000.

Because they are essentially made from unobtanium. It is kinda silly to suggest a Kurano to a non-watch geek who wants a want now. If you are going to suggest a Japanese watch brand as a gift Grand Seiko makes much more sense.

Sorry, but your post reeks of I just found the watch hobby. The objective portion of that declaration is categorically wrong.

Get the nice watch. He is eventually going to want one, probably in the near future. He'll wear it at minimum a few times a year for formal occasions. I got one instead of a high school class ring and wore it all throughout college for different occasions.

A nice watch is a great choice. Nothing trendy, something timeless that he will be able to wear now, and in the future.
A Tudor Black Bay is a fantastic choice. He can wear it on a rubber strap for starters and then move to leather or SS as he grows older.
A second choice, over a watch is a set of luggage and a trip. Since you are the only adult male in his life, I suggest you take it with him.
Costa Rica, Europe (Spain would be a great choice), Taiwan, or to whatever country is that he can use one of his 3 languages (other than English).
Make an opportunity to bond with him and let him enjoy being a Man without Mom looking over his shoulder.

I'd buy him a watch. My youngest is a Junior in high school and instead of a Senior ring he wanted a watch so I bought him a nice Seiko watch that he will be presented with at the rind ding ceremony.
