kids care about. whether 10k of their 50k NIL deal immediately goes to tuition and that’s in state.
they aren’t giving 100 kids a million dollars a year.

Gaston, I would normally tell you to F off or something like what happens on Beauty & the Beast. But I have come to respect your opinions and posts over time, and know you'll be rooting for the LSU Tigers no matter what.
So, best of luck and blessings to you and your son, and keep posting as always...

Even if a school had a $1 billion NIL budget I doubt there are too many kids who want to play professionally that are willing to be 3rd string just for a paycheck.
Anecdotal evidence today shows that highly recruited players who aren't guaranteed playing time almost immediately are very likely to enter the portal at some point.
My guess is even if your scenario happens best case is you have a ton of paper depth, but end up with a back end 3-4 deep full of marginal players just there because they are overpaid.

We know. It's called a grey shirt.

I’m with you…if you can’t field a badass team with 85 players…having 100 isn’t going to help.

I mean in theory, I guess you could hypothetically just give kids NIL deals instead of schollys but the reality of that is not happening anywhere in the country at least not that we've seen.

except there are rules to being a Walk-Ons and who counts toward that 85 number.
you can't just have some 4 or 5 stars take a shite ton of NIL and no scholarship money.

Even if a school can convince a kid to take a large bag in lieu of a scholarship, which is VERY doubtful, isn’t there a roster limit? You can’t just have “unlimited” players. Besides, players want to play…and sooner, than later. Coaches may want to load up on players and stack the bench. But it’s pretty clear, evident by the portal movement, that players do not want to wait their turn. They’re not going to ride the bench for the sake of money.

I guess we have to wait for rosters to be finalized but FSU and Trever Jackson looks suspicious.

Since decommitting from Ole Miss back on Oct. 29, Jones quarterback Trever Jackson had been mulling over his options.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback had over 20 offers, with programs like Akron, Appalachian State, Pittsburgh and Texas A&M on his trail.

Trever Jackson, a 4-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting cycle committed to the Seminoles on Wednesday. He is likely to be a walk-on,per Noles247.

So he had multiple offers and a full ride set up, but I guess he just loved FSU so much he will pay his own way, or do you think NIL is involved?

Why would an athlete care about getting a scholarship over cash money?
When the the cost of paying your own way is greater than the guaranteed NIL money.

That is incorrect.
Even before the era of open NIL, you had guys who turned down scholarship offers to smaller schools to go walk on at the Alabamas and LSUs of the world. Heck, LSUs starting RB Josh Williams came in as a walk on.
There have been several news reports about collectives as some schools (BYU was one I think) providing essentially the cash equivalent of a scholarship to walk-ons.
Most Sun Belt level schools aren’t able to provide NIL deals to more than a few players.

The school can’t say “hey, we’re making you the highest paid QB in the country per this here NIL deal and we will be covering the cost of your entire stay here bc we don’t have scholarships left?”
^^ where does ? go in that last sentence? I’ve never known there to correctly put it.

I don't even know why we're still pretending to require them to be enrolled in classes anyway at this point, honestly.
You realize, don't you, that for 95% of them, football is still about a free college degree?

I think the situation is a bit inaccurate because it’s a kicker in question.
I doubt schools are doing the same thing to 4/5 star skill players.

I think it’s about connections too.
I think more than 5% of SEC football players have the NFL as a goal as well.

This is about college football in general. Sure you have a small number of schools that will overcontribute to the draft, but if you look across DI, I bet the 95% is accurate.
You can't just use the Georgias of the world as your example. 51 of the SEC's 62 draftees last year came from 7 schools. So, the others averaged 1.5 apiece.
Similarly, 43 of the B1G's 55 draftees came from just 7 schools.
That's 14 schools from just two conferences accounting for almost HALF of the entire NFL draft.
The overwhelming majority of players in CFB are going to get much more in scholarship benefits than in NIL.

Your kid is a SEC recruit and you don’t know there is a roster limit including walkons? It’s 130 by the way.
Posted on 4/25/24 at 12:48 pm to Floyd Dawg
I said it wrong…unlimited scholarships is what I meant…and yes roster size would be the upper limit to that.
Thought about changing the title, but I’ll just own the mistake.
