Diver pinned under water by an alligator figured he had choice: His arm or his life

This had to be absolutely terrifying.
Alligator says: "Gimme dat arm, boy"
quote:
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) — Out of air and pinned by an alligator to the bottom of the Cooper River in South Carolina, Will Georgitis decided his only chance to survive might be to lose his arm.
The alligator had fixed his jaws around Georgitis' arm and after he tried to escape by stabbing it with the screwdriver he uses to pry fossilized shark teeth off the riverbed, the gator shook the diver and dragged him 50 feet (15 meters) down, Georgitis told The Post and Courier.
“I knew I was going to die right then and there,” he told the Charleston newspaper.
The alligator attacked Georgitis on April 15 as he surfaced from his dive, nearly out of air. His tank emptied with the gator's jaws crushing the arm he put up in defense. Georgitis figured he had one last chance.
“I put my feet up against him just launched back as hard as I possibly could and somehow ripped my arm out and not off,” Georgitis told ABC's Good Morning America.
Georgitis frantically swam to a friend's waiting boat and was taken to shore and the hospital. His arm was broken and he needed "a ton" of staples to close up the wounds from the alligator's teeth, he said.
There are probably several surgeries and a six months of recovery. His family has set up a page on GoFundMe to raise money to pay his medical bills.
“Every moment from here on out is a blessing to me,” Georgitis told Good Morning America.

That's a pretty big gator.

This is why they need to bring back the "I was Prey" show to Animal Planet.

There is a guy that posts here that goes by the handle " RiverDiver" and I'm pretty sure he's from S.C..
I'm sure it's not him, but the guy could start a heluva thread if it is.

I'm sure he was trying for them, but it's probably not so easy to do.
The closest I've ever come to death, was when a big gar got his snout caught in my shell bag. It was a damn fight and I nearly drowned.
I'm still here though and that gar, he dead.

He was stabbing it.
This story is nuts. The gator got tired of fighting so he dove to the bottom of a 50 ft river/swamp and laid on top of him to try and drown him.
quote:
As soon as his head broke the water line on April 15, Georgitis saw an alligator swimming nearby in the Cooper River.
"It made a beeline right at me," he said.
A foot away, the gator opened its jaws.
Thinking it was going for his head — a bite he believed would surely kill him — Georgitis threw up his right arm in a blocking move. The alligator clamped down on his forearm.
Anticipating the animal would twist his arm in a spin move to take him underwater, Georgitis wrapped his free arm and both legs around the body of the alligator so he would roll with it.
He's not sure how big the beast was, but he couldn't hook his ankles together when he wrapped his legs around it.
"And I'm 6' 2"," he said.
With the alligator's jaws clutching his arm from wrist to elbow, Georgitis took the screwdriver he uses to pry fossils out of the river bed and tried to stab the reptile in the eye.
He's not sure if he hit home, but the gator immediately shook him "like a rag doll" and dove to the bottom of the Cooper River near Goose Creek — where the lowest point is about 50 feet at that spot. The alligator pinned him to the bottom with the weight of its body. The only part of the gator he could still reach with the screwdriver was its gum line. He kept stabbing and struggling to get free.
Then his scuba tank went dry.
"I knew I was going to die right then and there," Georgitis said from his home in West Ashley.
The last thing he could think to try was ripping off his own arm. He planted both feet on the massive creature. Then he pushed as hard as he could.
Georgitis isn't sure how, but the gator's teeth scraped over his arm instead of tearing it off. He broke free and bolted for the surface. There, a friend waiting in a boat dragged him out of the water.

That is an area I don't think I would care to dive.
You've got gators and probably sharks too.
I worked at the shipyard there about 20 years ago. The Confederate Sub " The Hunley" is near there too.
I've dove in areas with gators, throw in sharks too and that's a big No Thank You.

It isn’t. I know people who dive those rivers looking for those fossilized Meg teeth. Gator encounters are real. Bull sharks too.
