Should they ignore the sequels and make this a soft reboot? Let's hear some ideas on where they should take this character next.

quote:

As she tells Empire in a major new career-spanning interview – available in the upcoming The Acolyte issue – this time she’s “coming in a bit more eyes wide open” to the whole experience. “I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it. I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now,” she explains. “I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time.” Even after three films – and a considerable amount of online discourse – Ridley still holds real affection for the world of Star Wars. “There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films,” she says. “Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.”

For now, she knows the story beats for what the new film will be, and – at the time of the interview – was preparing to read a script and feeling “curious about it all”. Whatever’s in store, it ultimately provided a strong basis for Ridley’s – and Rey’s – return. “It wasn’t a difficult decision,” she says. “I didn’t say yes right away, Kathy [Kennedy] was like, ‘Take as long as you need.’” Not that it took that long to say yes. “Why wouldn’t I [do it]? Yes, they have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people. It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character – like, can I even remember how to play her? It’s an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what’s changed for her.”

i'm going to preface this with the fact that i have nothing personal against Daisy Ridley. she seems to be a perfectly delightful woman, a wonderful actress, and in more capable hands, would/could/should have been a great addition to the Star Wars universe.

but

i cant think of a single direction they could take this character that would be even the least bit interesting unless they completely ignore the entire sequel trilogy and start from scratch with Rey. she is a complete and utter uninteresting Mary Sue who was magically born with complete mastery of the Force, combat skills, and piloting skills, and also has the ability to self-generate new Force powers on-call as plot demands. i would rather watch a new series of films on virtually anyone else in the sequel trilogy to include Maz Kanata, DJ the codebreaker, or the pink mist of Admiral Holdo's dead body.

i am 100% out on whatever this garbage turns out to be.

You can take it to the bank that Kathleen Kennedy will put a chick in it an make her gay. It will probably be the villain

Star Wars is dead. It will go down in history as the worst blunders in film history.

i’m not interested in Rey

I’m not interested in rebuilding the Jedi Order. I dont care to find out if the 3rd times the charm.

I am barely interested in Jedis even in universe. Solo and Mando are my 2 favorite characters to come out of all the movies.

If they have to make it, I want to see her struggle.

She wakes up in the AT-AT on Jakku, thinks about a wild dream she had about some company called Disney, and breaks the 4th wall to say that everyone should be fired.

Well, they already fricked up any chance of her having a legitimate character arc; otherwise I'd pick that.

Maybe have her lose her powers so she can reacquire them, and learn how to be a Jedi all over again? Let Luke, as a Force Ghost, actually be a mentor instead of a bitter old man?

The Disney trilogy already did so much with her character than any of the things that would make the character likeable would be nearly impossible to implement now. It'd be like trying to give Captain Marvel a legitimate character arc NOW - the ship has, sadly, sailed.

I don't mind strong female characters; I just want to see them grow into that the same way strong male characters do. If you want an action movie with a female character, then make THAT and then you can use a few lines of dialog to explain why they're competent. That, honestly, doesn't work when you're tying to work in a character into multiple movies and can harness abilities and powers it was shown takes training to harness.

No one asked why Arnold's character in Predator knew how to fight (and it wasn't the most critical part of the plot), but I'm sure people would sure as frick would want to know where he got his abilities if he started firing fireballs out of his arse.

Or Disney can come up with something original to screw up instead of screwing up other properties.
