Ah the old sunset club at Fred's. Mid to late 80's...$1 freshly squeezed screwdrivers on Thursday afternoons, the deck overlooking the pasture.
Epic times. Friday afternoons at the Tiger across the street with Beat the clock. Drinks started at 15 cents at 3 oclock and went up a quarter every 15 minutes IIRC.
Get drunk, get a big burger at TigerBurger and stumble back to Sharlo and collapse
My era as well. Could not have said it better myself. Those were the best Thursdays of my life. Add in the drink specials when Shaq and Company scored so many points.
Sorry to the OP, not exactly getting responses on the OLDEST bar in BR.
ETA: I'm not from BR, so I wouldn't begin to know the oldest bar. The Advocate columnist Smiley Anders has referenced his time at The Patio bar on Drusilla?/Jefferson?...I forget. Is it still there? Never been there myself.
How old is the Happy Note?

Well shite, I’m gonna shut up then. Lord knows when I was going to see the orthodontist when I was in junior high, a bar wouldn’t have made much of an impression on me.

Club 2010, where my body would get hyped.

Mr. G's, now Mrs. G's has to be in there.
George's downtown was opened in 1970.

It’s still there. Was my go to spot when I lived off of Jefferson in 2017-18. Was always the youngest person in there (27 at the time) and always had a great time playing oldies on the juke box for the regulars and taking shots of crown with the bartenders John and Molly
That was back when I was single. I brought my new gf (now fiance’) there thanksgiving night back in 2020 just to have a beer and show her my old drinking hole. There was 1 single person there grilling hot dogs out back drinking around a fire as if it we were in somebody’s backyard. She was like what the frick is this? We had 1 beer and left. Haven’t been back since

Pastimes, if you classify that as a bar and not just a resturant
It's gotta be this. And, yes, it's certainly more of a bar than a restaurant.
That bar area in that building has to be the longest continuously operating bar in Baton Rouge.

My dad tended bar at The Patio back in the early 60’s. I grew up in there. Can name you several bartenders that have come and gone in that place.

Pastime's website says it was originally a grocery store, but became a restaurant and bar in 1945. That's got to be before the area where the Patio is located was even built out.
Fleur De Lis would have been in the running here before it shut down.

City Club, 1957, but not sure that would be considered a bar.

You referring to Patio Lounge? Or The J?
I love Patio and think it’s actually pretty nice for a dive. Always very clean, and the owner drinks red wine so I can actually get wine instead of beer. And they cook huge spreads of food for games that actually looks good and is kept at proper temp.
The J… eh. I have a couple friends that practically live there, but it’s not really my scene. The patrons are a bit rougher, and the place is run down. I’ll go, but much prefer Patio.
Edit - I see you mean Patio. Give it another shot. It’s good times during the day.
I know what you mean though. The first time we ever went, we went out back where all the folding chairs are and it was all standing water and mosquitos. Wasn’t impressed.

Pastimes has always been a restaurant first. It does a good bar business, but it has always been a restaurant since it opened. It has always had a C-AB1 license which is only for restaurants.
As far as restaurants it is the 3rd oldest in town. The only older restaurants is Chicken Shack which was opened in 1935 and Louie’s Cafe in 1941 (although Louie’s temporarily closed and relocated).

Does the name Bob Malloy ring any bells?

Today in Baton Rouge History
March 20, 1945
In the early 1900’s, the sale of alcohol within a one-mile radius of LSU was prohibited. Just outside that perimeter lay Alesce’s Grocery store, which had opened in the 1920’s on the Corner of South Blvd and a gravel road that later became Nicholson Drive. The grocery store grew into a bar and restaurant, and in 1945
changed its name to The Pastime. Due to its proximity to LSU and the Mississippi River Bridge, which would be built overhead in 1968, success was assured, and the Pastime became a familiar and popular hangout. Today, it is Baton Rouge’s oldest bar and restaurant—as well as one of its most popular.
