Jim Hawthorne started that stupidity. His name was Alex, not Alec. My Dad actually knew the man; they were engineering students together at LSU.

Are your feelings hurt or something because you’re saying words wrong?

I’ve known several people with the last name Favre. None of them pronounce it the way Brett does, NONE.
Were any of them from South Mississippi? Just curious.

proper names are proper names. you can spell it Alex and pronounce it dumptruck, that is how proper names work.
It’s pronounced “SHY-thead”

His middle name was Alexander which is generally pronounced as Alig-Zander or Alic-Zander. If someone is seeking to use a shortened form of his name, it’s perfectly reasonable to shorten it to Alic or Alec when spoken, but to use Alex when written. His nickname was almost certainly used more often when spoken than written and the spoken version more than likely preceded the written version. If you want to argue that one is wrong, then it’s more accurate to say it is spelled wrong than that it is pronounced wrong.

I know the history and what not. But since his family messed up the pronunciation, why are we still using the wrong way to say it?
when you name something after someone, you pronounce the name the way they did.

I know that’s how people pronounce it. I’m asking why nobody realizes that they’re wrong when they do so.

The town in Rapides Parish is "Ellick", the baseball stadium is Alex.
