Sunday, if I can get a decent seat.
It was a full house so buy early.

I recently heard that Tolkien had read Dune, but wasn't overly impressed.
And Herbert was no fan of “Star Wars” so I guess it works out in the wash.
FWIW, i like Tolkien, Herbert and Lucas!

But yeah, I'll give it a watch.
I won’t be so presumptuous enough to say I think you’ll like it but I will say I don’t think you will be bored. I will promise you this: it will be a vast improvement over the Star Wars crapola we both have endured the last few years.

I've liked all versions, from the Lynch movie back in '84, the SyFy take & the most recent. Though to be honest, I don't remember much of the SyFy stuff, just that I thought it was well done.
I'm trying not to pay attention to the praise, no offense, because I think some of it might have to do with a lack of decent movies and shows, thanks to current day.
But by all accounts I'm still hearing that it's really up there, so we'll see.

Let’s deviate from the true source work and give a female minority a more prominent role and have her speak on morality
Whenever a literary work of the scope of Dune is translated to the silver screen, there is bound to be some condensation of the source material. That is the nature of such film adaptations.
It seemed to me the change here helped propel the narrative by highlighting the ambiguity of Paul’s own motivations. Your mileage may differ.

Lynch movie
IMO, it fails as a stand-alone film: I had not yet read the book when I first saw in theaters so I was completely lost. It inspired me to seek out the book though.
And several years after reading the novel, I revisited the Lynch version again on VHS and appreciated what the film tried to accomplish. It was a great visual feast.

First of all Zendaya is barely a minority. You’re acting like they cast Leslie Jones. The Fremen are clearly middle eastern inspired so she’s right on the nose ethnicity.
I agree she wasn’t that great, but I think that’s relative to how great Chalamet and Bardem and Butler were. Overall her increased role served a purpose of highlighting what Paul was giving up when he embraced his role as messiah, and the moral ambiguity that entailed.
Villeneuve has said he sees Paul’s story as a Michael Corleone analogue, and so it makes sense to focus on that aspect.
Tl;dr - As much as Hollywood is often focused on wokeness at the expense of quality, if you see that here you’re officially too ate up by it.

You are misreading my comments— I made no suggestion otherwise. The deep spirituality and the physical hardiness of the Fremen is a major theme in Herbert’s overall vision so I have no issue with Chani serving as a moral figure in the film adaptation.
I indeed thought the film was well cast: I especially like Javier Bardem as Stilgar. He brought both great humor and poignancy to the character.

Sorry was responding to the person you were responding too. The person who apparently had a huge issue with the Zendaya/Chani role.

Did Elvis live up to the hype?

Butler is phenomenal in the screen time he has. He only has like 6 minutes of screen time though. But magnetic in every second of it.

It’s being over praised in media because of the Chani change. It’s a very good movie but her screen time, acting and character change stopped this from being an alltime great movie.

Tickets purchased. Already 2 showings today sold out, but not quite 1/2 full for my 1pm slot.

It certainly is not. Villeneuve is receiving the majority of the praise in the reviews, with its narrative being the element holding it back.

Kaiju Have you seen it? You are such a fan of the genre, I thought you would’ve been there opening night.

The one knock it’s getting is that it’s a cold movie without heart and Chani is supposed to be the heart in the movie. She’s the only problem with the film from having too much screen time to her change to the actress like I said.

Was it better than the first? Because that was like watching paint dry

I just saw it and really liked it. My only complaints were the casting of Walken and the lack of “vibration” from the AMC Prime theater seats. Fire away at those

Welp, saw the movie. Good crowd too, for a Sunday afternoon. About 1/2 full, I'd guess. Fans, from what I could tell.
Now, I'm not a book reader, so much of what I know is only from onscreen.
Spoiler: I was today years old when I discovered that the Weirding Way as shown in the '84 movie wasn't from the book. Damn! So there's that. What can I say, I'm not deep into the DUNE fandom.
I didn't care for seeing Sam Brinton in the role of Feyd-Rautha, that was so well played by Sting. That creeped me out. In fact, the entire Harkonnen world weirded me out. Zero color on the entire planet? What's that about? And apparently I've been mispronouncing the name for 40 years. Harkon-nen, not Har-KO-Nan? Whatever.
Still a decent flick well-made and all. I guess my biggest beef of all was Zendaya. She's terribly mid, imo. She's older than Sydney Sweeney but will always look like a gawky 13 yr old girl in my eyes. But it is what it is. The kids apparently dig her.
*Two more things - Sandworms. How can they be some great test for a true Fremen to call and ride on if they're also used like a planetary rapid transit system? There was some crazy GoT dragon commuting going on that seemed a bit sketchy. How far South is "South" anyways? And what's keeping the worms from diving underground to avoid the storms? Did I miss something?
** Paul's drinking of the Water of Life. I really preferred the '84 version to how it was done in this movie. One was much more dramatic than the other.
