Not calling a timeout to set up a play?

I’m pumped for the big win. But when you watch the sequence back, it was some great hustle by LSU and some luck.
Does it concern anybody that our coach wouldn’t want to setup a play for a better shot than what was attempted and blocked?

He said he didn’t want to give Kentucky time to set their defense

If it worked, it was genius. No guarantee a timeout play would've worked either. Driving to get a foul call wasn't the craziest idea.

In the post game interview he told the reporter he wished he had called a time out to do just that.

Nope. I like that we just ran at 'em.

Nope. He said in the press conference he didn't want to allow them to have a set drawn up for the final play.

The media asked him that very question. His answer was pretty good too. He basically said he could have called the time out to set a play, but Kentucky would have had a chance to set up a defense, and he rolled the dice that it would be chaotic, and it was.

So our coach was scared to design a play because the other team gets to set a defense.
Ouch.
I’m extremely encouraged by our improvement but this aspect is very concerning to me. 3-4 seconds on the clock and I like chaos. We inbounded with 10 seconds and got to our side of the court with 8.

No lol. He said he discussed the final play in the previous timeout.

And you’re happy with the plan?
If that sequence doesn’t end with the block landing in our players hands and tear dropping it to the lane…..the rant would want McMahons head on a plate.
The Fighting tigers pulled through last night but I was discouraged in that last sequence. We were due for a win like that but the reality is that we need to have confidence in execution of our scheme to win the games we need down the stretch.

I agree with coach on this. He went with game flow to that point being the best option.
Jordan saved the ball and Ward put it in.

It was a close game for a long stretch. One or two possesion game. If you discuss in a previous timeout what to do on the last possession why do you need to call another timeout?
Look at what happened to UK. Coach Cal called his last timeout with 21 seconds left to draw up a play designed to get a quick shot off which allowed us to win the game instead of draining the clock. It goes both ways.

I liked McMahon’s idea of not letting Kentucky set its defense. Wright lost the ball as he was going up. McMahon could have called timeout, drawn up the play just like that and Wright still could have lost the ball. Sometimes, a plan comes down to execution and if the execution is flawed, it sometimes doesn’t matter how good the plan was.
Wright came up with his own plan on the fly. They won the game. Right now, that’s all that matters.

Learn ball, there are plenty of coaches who let their guys play without a timeout in late game situations
The initial shot was ugly, but Kentucky losing their man in a ORB box out situation happens in part because they aren’t reminded in the huddle by Cal
Pretty sure we didn’t call a TO against South Carolina and it worked to perfection as well

I like how the coach gets no credit for having the team in a position to win on the last possession.

I think his trigger man just pulled too early and he trusted his defense. He was right as they had 3 men camping in the lane when all we did was dribble penetrate. We were fortunate the ball bounced our way and our guy made a heady pass.
This doesn’t go both ways here. Cal called a timeout and set up a play.
His defense was also prepared for our play.

Nobody is not giving McMahon credit here. I’m just disappointed in the sequence as it relates to tournament time.

Please go watch both McMahon and Cal's press conferences. A lot of your questions would be answered by spending 15 minutes watching 2 youtube videos.
You will find out that it was designed for Kentucky's player to shoot that quickly (and McMahon agreed with that decision).
