re: Where does the false idea that Les Miles liked to plug guards in at LT come from?

Anyone that makes bone head decisions year after year mustn't be very good amirite?
If you aren't very good you don't win games, amirite?
Inferred, but not stated is the premise that if someone that makes good decisions year after year must be pretty good, amirite?
And if you are pretty good you win lots of games, amirite?
Simple. Bonehead decisions = bad (losing) seasons, Good seasons = good (winning) seasons.

I hope he sees this, bro.
I don’t have to actually describe any Miles boneheaded decisions, as there are too many to list.

It's unfortunate that Miles didn't do a better job of landing offensive tackles. He did get Collins and Black, who as you indicated, were better suited to play guard in the NFL. Barksdale and Hawkins were solid OT on the collegiate level.
I thought Les played on the OL himself at Michigan, so he should have done better.

I don't think he was quite that short but did question the 6'5" he was listed at, especially when you saw him next to Jamarcus in the huddle. Also, I thought he could have been a RT but we'll never know.

But they were “very quality” guards.

ok I won't disagree with you on that. You see, unlike you I didn't play or coach college football, I'll have to defer to your greater inside knowledge.
I'm just applying basic, simple logic. Either he made too many boneheaded decisions to list and never had any winning seasons. Or he mostly winning seasons and made good decisions and you don't know what you are talking about.
Simple logic

You ever work for a great company that had a doofus in-over-his-head douche bag for a manager that got the credit?

I'm sorry you have a shitty job.

I’m sorry you can’t admit reality…
ETA: The dude got fired and then not fired… then trotted out the same abysmal offense the next season, after spouting bullshite all off-season about changing things up… he ate shite with said terrible offense and was subsequently fired again… just ONE example for you, sir.

Collins started 75 games at RT in the NFL.
Barksdale started 78
they were more than fine college Tackles.

Lmfao this was my thought as well.

At every other position, except QB, we had about 75% of our starters make NFL rosters. At offensive line, and QB, it was more like 20%.
I've heard that 87% of the statistics you see on the internet are made up.
But your point does stand regarding O-linemen.
To me, it seemed like Les recruited guys for his offense and a lot of them were road graders, low centers of gravity, and able to move most people they faced in college. Made for a great running game. And it doesn't necessarily translate into the NFL. A lot of very good to great college players can't or at least don't really translate into the NFL.
I think Les gets some criticism he deserves and a lot he doesn't. Not many coaches have had the level of success he had for the duration that he had it in the SEC.

IDK... But the Les hate is real. He only averaged over 10 wins a year for over 10 years, has a chip. Gordy Rush would call that... SOLID.

Like many shibboleths about Miles, it's simply not true.

La'el was an emergency OT but did his real elite damage at OG in the NFL.
Malone was a OG all the way
How many 6-6+ guys did we have playing OT for us?
Where did the 6-6 minimum rqmt come from? This is purely artificial. There are several OTs in the NFL under this. Wonder how many CBK had at ND or Nick that were > 6-5?
Both Ciron and La'el won the SEC's Jacob's trophy playing LT. Ciron is listed as 6-5.
While at ND ('10-'21) CBK had 12 OL drafted of which two he inherited as RSs. While Les was here ('05-'16) we had 7 OL drafted of which one he inherited (Whitworth). That number does not include:
Will Arnold (Saban recruit)
Ciron
Faulk
La'el
All would have been at least 3rd rd picks.
So when these are accounted for, Les's track with OL is just slightly behind CBK at ND.
Our OL talent was rarely an issue during Les's tenure. Rather, it was his predictable, vanilla offense scheme that warrants criticism on days ending in y.
