One of my first memories of coming to grips with how the media influences American opinion, not through information as much as their own personal vendettas and spin, and how this was also supported by the entertainment industry was during the Nixon administration and afterwards when you were absolutely bombarded with it, even well after he had left office. Even as a kid I could not escape the consistent drumming of Watergate everywhere I turned, and I’m sure most of you who were cognizant of those days remember that as well.

And look, although I still think Nixon did a good job in establishing relations with China at the time, and was a truly smart man and politician, and got America out of Vietnam from a point of strength, I am equally turned off to his getting rid of the gold standard and strong arm tactics he used, but so did others I suppose. However, regardless of the complexities of Richard Nixon, he had the media and Democrats in general figured out pretty well. He definitely had their number, and they knew it too.

Agree with your general sentiment here = Nixon was really one of our greatest presidents - notwithstanding the gold reserve decision. (and I don't understand enough about financial qualities at that level - but I know I didn't like it.)

As for the media bias = yes - that was my first observation of purposeful distortion of the 'news.' I went to Pomona CA as soon as I graduated LSU in 1960. Stayed there one year before I transferred to St.Louis MO.

I was on the side of Nixon in the '60 election and thought he deserved to win and was aware of the charges wrt 'cheating in Illinois and Texas' - but accepted his generous statement that = "it would cause a constitutional crisis to contest it"

So he went to California and ran for Gov. In St. Louis I noticed a front page Post Dispatch article about his race in CA. - it depicted Nixon at some informal street gathering where he was talking with a group regular people.

The photo was an odd composition - someone had to climb up onto something to get the elevation required - it depicted Nixon from the waist up in the midst of a half dozen people in close attention -

just over his head was a street sign

the sign said "DEAD END"

I saw that and thought - "wtf!!! - they did that on PURPOSE!!!!!"

That was my first revelation of news bias - my mother had taught me from infancy = "if they say it in the papers it has to be true."

and I believed it

- til I didn't anymore.

Nixon was the second president taken out by the deep state (read Geoff Shepard). The first was Kennedy. And we know what they did, and continue to do, to Trump.

Taking down the Republican Nixon emboldened the media and they have been after every GOP president since 1974.

Nixon did a good job he fricked up when his looney arse recorded everything which was the standard for presidents but at that time it was a 3 course plater for news media.

My early impressions of Nixon were indeed framed by the "Media Elitist Complex". I'd always thought Watergate made him the most corrupt president of all time. Knowing what I know now, it was child's play.

The celebratory portrayal of anti-war protests through media, pop culture, and education always made me think, erroneously, that Nixon was largely responsible for Vietnam and a very unpopular president.

I was a bit shocked when I first learned on my own that he was actually RE-elected in a landslide election. Watergate was really about media sensationalism being used as a political weapon to take down a popular president. And anti-war protests only represented a youthful minority while Nixon's ending of LBJ's awful war, the way he did, deserved a lot more praise.

Learning that Nixon was actually a good president was part of my enlightenment as to just how slanted and corrupt our national media and education complexes are.

As you said, watching them go from simply slanted to outright propagandists that we have today has been difficult and heartbreaking to witness. Their damage to this country is immeasurable.

Nixon carried every single U.S. state in the 1972 election (except for MA).

Nixon was a brilliant mind. One of the smartest men to ever hold the office. But he was incredibly paranoid and hated the media.. for good reason. But he could never overcome his paranoia.

I am curious as to how much he felt as though his hands were tied here. During the Johnson era, European countries noticed the crazy spending (welfare spending, Vietnam and space race) and lack of increased taxing to compensate. They began to ask for gold for their dollars. Agreed though that leaving the Bretton Woods agreement and switching over to the petro-dollar really sucked.
