Their replacements lasted less than a year with the Eagles. Both took the fall for the Eagles collapse this season.
Yes but last year also we’re getting some interviews and expected to be next in line as hot candidates. My main point is how much those views and league opinions can change over the course of a season

If that really is true, it feels like overplaying your hand a bit. There’s only so many jobs that open each year and that carousel can quickly close and leave you without a seat and those coaching seats can change overnight
This time last year both the eagles coordinators were getting floated as potential HC candidates, a year later they were looking for jobs. Not saying this will happen, but sometimes you have to fire while the iron is hot
Carolina I understand, one bc they have no assets and no real QB flexibility, I would tell them hell no too unless they wanted to godfather offer me. But Washington has some talent, and great draft capital to reset the table or get a QB in a good class at 2. That’s a sneaky great job now that the stank of Snyder is out the building
This.
He's not going to get the benefit of Detroit being a "good story" next season. People are going to expect them to be good now and any drop off from this season will be criticized. Carolina was the worst job of this cycle with a QB they paid a ton for who looks incredibly overwhelmed and a volatile owner. The only upshot is the HC would be coaching in the Special Olympics division of the NFL, so the bar for success is pretty low.
Washington seems to have the potential for momentum. Their bozo owner is gone, they have some pieces to build around, and they are in a spot to get a top QB prospect. Sure, the division has Philly and the regular season Cowboys, but it probably was one of the better opportunities available. At least better than Carolina, Atlanta, and probably the Raiders

Probably even more true in Washington. As awful as Bryce Young looked this year he probably has more promise than any QB on the roster in Washington.
To me Howell looked exponentially better than Young. He had bad games but the dude stepped up in the pocket and let it rip. There’s a decent qb in there imo but he needs any kind of semblance of protection.

You're a year behind with those narratives. They were expected to be good this season.

Everything you've said is right--it is definitely a gamble for him. BUT, he obviously does't think it's as big of a gamble as we do, and I think the biggest piece of this is just how much a testament that gamble is to to the incredible culture that's been created in Detroit by not just Campbell, but from ownership on down. How many organizations in our lifetimes have been so stable (and attractive) that their coordinators could be picky and pass on head coaching gigs and could you have ever imagined Detroit, of all places, would be one of them?
Again, I agree it's a huge gamble, but to me, the story is more about what it says about Detroit rather than being an indictment on Washington or Johnson's decision making. He must have a lot of faith in the owner/GM/HC/Goff combo to make that decision, because he's gambling on them just as much as he is himself.

One of the bigger surprises of the coaching carousel this year.
Assuming they have great years again, I would love to see either Ben or Brady become the Saints HC once Allen is fired

next year you'll possibly have the Giants, Saints, Eagles, Bills, Bears, Cowboys, Jags, Jets available too so no real shortage of availability next year either.

There’s always 7 jobs open so not really worried about there not being a job available, more about keeping your momentum as a coaching prospect to be the top option for one of those jobs.
Also no real promise that those jobs will be any better than these jobs when they come available.

Also have to keep in mind how the cycles go in the NFL...
1. Work your way up to the coordinator position, which can take a while.
2. Become a successful coordinator on a good team.
3. Get hired as a HC.
4. Boom or bust... Usually the latter, and often due to things out of your control (cap issues, no decent QB, inept GM, crazy-arse owner, etc)
5. Land back down in coordinator land and may not get another shot... It took Raheem Morris 13 years to wash that Tampa stank off.
So, you want to choose your organization and situation carefully if you are a hot commodity OC or DC.

The stank of Daniel Snyder still permeates that organization.
Gonna take a while to get it off.
