This has never been the case. The average for all of LSU's natties was 7ish.
If your consistently in the top 10-15, you have a chance to compete. Rankings aren't perfect and they don't take roster make up into consideration. If you get a bunch of 5* WRs or RBs, its not going to translate.

These are strawman arguments. No one is saying you can't win a championship unless you recruit in the top 5. It's not just about LSU's national title years, it's about the years in between. Lets see what Washington does over 5 years. What did LSU do between titles? It's about being 11+ wins (10 regular season) every year.
