Recruiting classes of the CFP Final

This discussion came up during the signing day meltdown and I feel like it's worth revisiting now that the semifinal games have been played.
Average recruiting class ranking over the last 4 cycles:
Michigan - 13
Washington - 40
It is my contention that in the portal era, when don't yet know if you require a top 5 recruiting ranking average to win it all like in the past. Could this year’s results be an indication of things to come?
Roster management and retention are paramount in today’s game.

Coaching and team leadership will always matter too. You need both great recruits and great leaders to win.

A great QB can cover a multitude of sins.
Penix is a great QB.
Washington does not have nearly the success it had without Penix.

Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State are the top 3 teams in the Blue Chip Index, which shows who has the most talent according to recruiting rankings.
Obviously this metric is now a bit outdated with the transfer portal.
Washington won the Joe Moore award, and had Biletnikoff and Heisman finalists with a No. 40 class average, so they are doing something right, whether it is portal, scouting, development, retention, etc.
If Washington wins, they will be the first team in like 30 years to win the national title with less than 50 percent of its roster being 4 star or above.

Penix hit rough patch mid way through the season but the team still found ways to win.

Good post and great trivia stat in your last sentence. And I as believe, stars recruiting ranking is overrated to a degree. For example, Orgeron's classes were high in the rankings but his recruiting very unbalanced. He got his high ranking with WRers and a couple of other positions but failed to sign more than 2 or 3 OL each class. Also, his CB recruiting was highlighted in the bowl game against C Florida when he was moving WRers to the secondary. And I'm pretty sure at least one of them actually played in the game.
As Spurrier once said, "Since Alabama wins the recruiting title every year, I'm surprised they don't win the National Championship every year." No doubt a little shot towards little Nicky.
My only disagreement with your post is that IMO the highest teams in the recruiting rankings does NOT mean they are getting the most talent. Since the recruiting rankings have nothing to do with how they will do in college (they are based upon future pro draft rounds), your statement about "development" is the key here. Their star rankings are strictly on potential, NOT how good they are now.

This has never been the case. The average for all of LSU's natties was 7ish.
If your consistently in the top 10-15, you have a chance to compete. Rankings aren't perfect and they don't take roster make up into consideration. If you get a bunch of 5* WRs or RBs, its not going to translate.

I was informed last night Washington roster is filled with 5th year seniors.
They're going to suck next year.

Exactly. It is well documented MANY Michigan players came back this season to try to win a 'chip'. Having those developed, experienced veterans cannot be overstated. Also having elite coaching for development, scheming/game prep, and in-game adjustments is critical to competing at the highest level. IMO we lack those coaches on DEF and w/o addressing it will yield similar results in 24.

This is why Little Nicky will never be the goat IMO...

I have never understood the worship of the guy. He coaches 5 years at Michigan State and never even won a Big 10 title. At LSU he won 1 NC. He went to the Dolphins and increased their win total 1 game in 2 years.
At Alabama of course, he has done much better than any of his other stops but {surprise}, he gets to cherry-pick players, he gets to cherry-pick his assistants because money is no object, etc. I have never thought little Nicky is the greatest coach of all time.
If he was, why did he FAIL at Michigan State, FAIL with the Dolphins, and not exactly put LSU at the top of college football either.

Over his eight seasons as a head football coach (through today), Kalen DeBoer has compiled a 104-11 (.945) record.
Yea, sure. They are going to suck.

These are strawman arguments. No one is saying you can't win a championship unless you recruit in the top 5. It's not just about LSU's national title years, it's about the years in between. Lets see what Washington does over 5 years. What did LSU do between titles? It's about being 11+ wins (10 regular season) every year.

it shows, washington is undersized accross the board.
just goes to show that undersized guys can ball, especially when paired with great coaching and penix.
great TEAM

He had injuries and the flu in midseason. You could tell in the Pac 12 title game and last night that he was back to full strength.

Not gonna lie, I’m not a Bama fan either, but this is a very dumb take. He had LSU on the way to what Bama is now when he was here.

The comment I responded to said "require a top 5 recruiting ranking average to win it all like in the past." Which is in fact one person saying that.
If LSU would have had a good QB in '08-'10, LSU could have made it back. Same post Mett.

He lost the last game he coached at LSU to an Iowa team on a hail Mary pass as the last play of the game. Then he threw Ronnie Prude under the bus for it. What is a delusional take is you thinking LSU was remotely in the same status when he left as Alabama has been the last several years. Cherry-picking players and coaches got Alabama there...not little Nicky.
LSU record with little Nicky
8-4 10-3 8-5 13-1 9-3
Sorry, that doesn't remotely resemble a program at the top. If you think so, then you must think Brian Kelly's 2 10 win seasons in 2 years at LSU makes him the GOAT.
