I haven’t read the whole thread yet, but why do you say it doesn’t add up?

The semester just ended a few weeks ago. If he did have an issue with grades, it wouldn’t become apparent until after the semester ended. And you wouldn’t typically get wind of it until something like this happens - i.e. not traveling with the team.
