Do you not realize that YOU are ‘making comments?’

Roger, it would benefit you greatly if you took more mental health days from work and this board.

Good observations IMO.
That’s a good way to show everyone how unnecessary you are. 1-2 weeks is one thing, after that ppl have adjusted to your absence.

If your job can exist with you taking a full week off at time, the company should probably eliminate that job.
Workers today are soft.

I think what you’re seeing is the younger workers take days off as they earn them. The older employees stockpile them in case of emergency then end up having to burn them later in the year.

As usual not sure why we care how people use their "earned" PTO. There is no right or wrong way
Yep.
I will use my pto as I see fit and everyone else should be entitled to the same.

I manage 3 teams so get a little bit of it all, but two guys just kill me.
One guy, 72 years old, refuses to take time off. He's on FTO, meaning he has unlimited days off. He feels bad even going to a doc appt. I don't even bother trying to encourage him to take time off....he lives to work and has that old school work ethic.
Another guy, on a counted PTO, took every Friday off from middle of October to the end of the year. Younger dude. There are only 3 people on his team and they require 2 to operate. So this dude absolutely fricked his teammates over. Had to talk to him about using his PTO more wisely next year...to which I just got an "ok".
I have one guy, on FTO, who took 41 days this year. He's going to get a talking to during his review. That's way too many. Rest assured, he'll have excuses...he constantly dodges work. He's in his 50's.

I’ve found that younger workers (25-35) are more likely to take a Thursday/Friday off here and there through out the year and maybe one week long stint during the spring or summer time. Without fail this sends the older workers (45-60) into orbit. You’ll start to hear all sorts of passive aggressive comments like “must be nice” or “does he/she ever work”. These same old heads will “forget to take a day off because they’re so busy” (always the martyr) and then take one massive month long vacation at the end of the year. IMO this is way more irresponsible than spacing it out reasonably through the year. Just something ive observed while being in the work force.
Sounds like you are lazy with no work ethic.

As part of that older age group, I know I’m gonna take off about 10 days in the month of January every year to hunt. I’m also gonna take off a week and a half every June for a family vacation.
That’s half of my days off for the year. The other half I hold onto in case of some sort of an emergency. I’m also on salary and any OT I work goes into comp time so I can easily build 100 hrs of that a year

I get a lot of vacation. I can't ever feel right about taking more than a week at a time off. It's strange how I am. I guess I hate all the emails and catch up when I get back.
I'm off every other Friday, so I end up taking a lot of Thursdays and some Mondays off.
Still going to roll five weeks over to next year. I guess I need to learn to take more time.
The only people who need to be made fun of are the losers who burn up all of their sick time every year.

Guess it’s a matter of perspective. If you are a high functioning manager and can train your team up to be successful without micro managing them, no reason a two week trip to Europe is off limits.
If you are replacing the grease in the McDonald’s fryers, then yeah, you better show up to work.

I am a picture of health so one one would believe me if I randomly called in one day. The obese people ( especially with kids) no one doubts it

My secretary does the one month thing at the end of the year and it drives me insane.
I am with the young baws on this.

Longest vacation I've taken in 10 years was 7 days. I'd take more if there was anyone who could cover for me.
Posted on 12/22/23 at 9:27 am to deathvalleyfreak43
First time in 25 years I’m going to roll over vacation. I get 5 weeks and will be rolling over 7 days. I’ve been backfilling a role since August and I have no backup. I was taking the occasional Friday off but was still being bothered with work crap so I just started working from home those Fridays and saved the vacation for next year when I go back to my normal role.
