i don't think we're going to try to teach him how to walk and chew gum simultaneously. i would think, and hope to god, our defensive coaches teach techniques, leverage, footwork, handwork etc that he's likely not getting at the high school level. he has the frame, just finetune the other areas.

disagree.
Sopsher was fat and out of shape.
McKinley is a physical specimen that just doesn't know how to play

There's nearly always a leap that has to be made for most athletes that "move up". HS to College is big because a lot of players never faced the type of competition they'll see in the SEC. Think a DL who is physically gifted but never had to learn good techniques because he never had to (until he did...)
Only a small percentage of HS players are "college ready", and even those players (should) get better as they learn more techniques and control over their gifts.
That said, you should expect that a kid with a 5-star rating shouldn't have to make that big of a jump. In this case, McKinley probably got that rating because of his physical potential (that's my assumption, anyway).
Also, don't forget that "learning how to use your body" isn't just physical - it's also mental. And who in their right mind would ever call a 17yo an "adult" and expect them to focus, act and think like someone in their late 20's or early 30's?
My only point: Maybe he rates a 5*, maybe he doesn't. Either way, he's worth pursuing if he's interested (and that's the rub, isn't it?).

I saw it first hand with Raekwon
Guy had no idea how to use his body in high school despite towering over everyone else. And his high school teammate, that signed with Rutgers, dominated in high school while Raekwon was passive and not nearly as productive.

we can agree to disagree and I will still love you
we also desperately need help on the line so at this point why not

First thing, it’s not like he’s going to Abbeville. Acadiana doesn’t make championship 3 of the last 5 years with bad coaching.
McKinley is in great shape. The problem is he’s not going to be a sprinter in college. And even though he is in good shape he’s slow off the ball and can’t shed blocks. You can say it’s coaching but I’ve seen Acadiana put out some good DLineman that didn’t have his measurables but still did better. Walter Bob and Cam George are two within the last few years that come to mind. He can be a good DL in college, I just don’t think his heart is there. And add to the fact that he will be getting paid so there will be less incentive… I just don’t see him fulfilling that potential.

Raekwon was an animal in high school, not sure what you were watching but he had all of the traits of someone who was going to be a star at Alabama. He was at a disadvantage and had a legitimate excuse of being almost 6’8” and most kids who are that tall being late bloomers and still looked like a beast.
I’ll stand by this just like I did with Sopsher while a portion of the board gasses him up because they think it’s going to somehow help us in recruiting. The staff absolutely has to take a chance on Dom because we desperately need DT’s and he has potential, but not everyone has the ability to become technically elite at their sport. His film is terrible and it’s basically 3 minutes of him running straight into 190 pound 2A linemen, no lateral movement, no technique at all whatsoever, looks soft and stiff, etc. It’s just not elite college player film.

Kim Mulkey isn't coming to LSU. They said.
Mulkey taking over the DL coaching role and McKinley signing with the good guys confirmed.

I think the negative perception around McKinley is mostly due to him not playing anything close to a 5-star level this season
So it is a Sopsher- like situation.

He didn’t run Cain off lol. Cain chose the NFL over LSU in which I don’t blame him. Try to keep up.

Y’all don’t know what happened with Cain so stop acting like you do. If House wasn’t here Cain would still be here.
Posted on 12/19/23 at 11:10 am to MrWiseGuy
Definitely would take him but most threads I’ve seen about McKinley says that he definitely shouldn’t be a 5*. Plays with hardly no energy and is non existent in most games. Hopefully the college ranks can get the laziness out of him.
Posted on 12/19/23 at 11:12 am to lsugradman
Then why don’t you stop acting like you know house is the reason Cain left? Because you don’t know shite either.
All I know is Payton came and snatched Cain away to the Broncos.

Ok buddy I don’t know shite. Cain just left in the middle of spring and him and House cried as they had their final embrace.

I dont think the book is closed on Quincy. Is it surprising that he couldn’t make much of an impact considering how bad we were? Sure but He’s still very green and an absolute physical freak. He can still be a good player.

I agree with both posters here. Until someone pointed it out to me, I had NO IDEA that services HS prospects ratings are based on PRO potential. IMO, that is INSANE since no one on the planet Earth can project 4 years out. Don't believe me...watch all the busts from NFL 1st round in the year they are eligible...not 4 years in advance!
I just watched his highlights. What was funny were his first 2 were INTs at the LOS where he got blocked well but the ball literally fell into his hands. I like him fine but no way is he a 5* by MY standard which is out of HS would he be a significant contributor his 1st year in college...absolutely NOT! Comparing him and Reliford. Reliford is more of a 5* IMO than McKinley and I haven't decided whether Reliford is a 5* or high 4*. The services should be indicted (other than On3 that has him 59th) for rating Reliford a low 4*. What a COMPLETE JOKE!
