The only other contenders that come to mind is the Godfather and BTF.
Better than both, if you are talking trilogies you have to have 3 great movies. There is no movie in LOTR that dips to Godfather 3 or BTTF 2 levels.
BTTF is closer than Godfather though.

Sticking to the source material while updating it for modern audiences, doesn’t exactly sync very well.

It's the best trilogy of all time, and it's not close IMO.
One of the coolest things I ever did movie-wise was my two cousins and I went to the premiere of RotK at Tinseltown in Baton Rouge. And they were showing the first two extended versions and then the release of RotK. We were there all day long, but it didn't seem like it. That was an incredible movie experience.

Never said update for modern audiences, that was someone else.

Saw Fellowship on opening night
Caught each one opening day - matinee showing, with my father and mother (who had been divorced about 25 years at that point). A nice memory.
Hooked in the 70s and read LOTR once a year for about 20 years straight.

Mistook your quote of them as an endorsement. Got it.
I don’t know if a book accurate movie could be made, but perhaps a series? Peter Jackson crafted the best version he could by removing elements like Tom Bombadil and the sacking of the Shire while adjusting certain other elements.

Lets ruin the series with woke representation (modern audiences)

Didn't they do that with the recent Amazon series?

Not now. Nothing great based on older stories can be made now bc we can’t ever even have book-accurate casting anymore due to DEI.

Loved the books and the movies. I heard Amazon tried to kill it

There is a special place in hell for people like you. Magic the Gathering already made a black as night Aragorn on cards.

Loved the movies, but still pissed off about no Tom Bombadil.

I just finished my yearly rewatch this week and believe there is zero need for a modern reboot. Visually the movies hold up way better than the more recent hobbit movies.

It’s one of my favorite trilogies and I can’t imagine watching it on regular cable.
Gotta do extended version blu ray

Peter Jackson did an amazing job of staying true to the books and brining that beautiful world to life. The small parts he left out make sense (Tom Bombadil for instance). Makes you wonder why he decided to rape The Hobbit by changing the story.
