Made an observation during a playoff game last night and have a question about the kickoff rule. If the returner touches the ball and him touching the ball changes the direction of the ball and causes it to go out of bounds, is it a penalty for kicking the ball out of bounds? Or should the return team get the ball at the spot where it went out bounds?

If R muffs the ball and it goes out of bounds it is R's ball at the spot it went out of bounds.

No it was not. I was under the impression the return team received the ball where it went out of bounds. However, a flag was thrown and the return team started at the 35

There's no way the rule was applied correctly then. If so I telling my return man to knock it out of bounds anytime it's remotely close to the sidelines.

That’s the thing, the ball was not even close to the sideline. He muffed it and the direction of the ball changed causing it to go out of bounds at the 3.

Mandeville/ St. Amant. It was a 7 point game and instead of Mandeville getting the ball at the 3 where it went out of bounds, they got it at the 35. Big swing of momentum.

I would hope high school playoff games would get high quality refs, but you’d be surprised how unqualified high school refs are especially at lower classifications.

Touch negates the penalty. However, if a player touches ball on playing field and momentum of ball carries it across goal line, it is dead and a touchback.

shite call. Why wasn’t the kickoff into the endzone?

R will get the ball at the OOB spot.

Now had R not touched it at all, then it would have been a kick OOB untouched by R and they can take it at the 35, back K up and re-kick, or R can take it at the OOB spot plus 5 yards(if the OOB spot is past the 31).

It should have been R's ball at the 3.

They misapplied the rule

after watching the video, it looks like the line judge ruled in touched and out of bounds at the 3 and field judge came in and discussed it with him and white hat and then ball wend to 35 with a foul.

Hard to tell if R actually touched it from angle of camera, ball did bounce pretty oddly
