Anyone ever built their own tube amp?

Been looking at videos of people making their own amps. Started with someone building from a kit. Then some videos of those more familiar with the circuitry actually designing and building their own. I have a basic understanding of electronics and am thinking of getting a book or two on it.

Yes. I attended a trade school for Industrial Electronics in the early 80s and built a tube amp circuit.

I have a mechanical engineering degree and took some circuits and electronics classes. But its been 15 years. I know there are plenty of diagrams to copy, but I'd like to also play around amd do my own thing within reason. Would you consider it attainable, or a little complex to jump into?

I don't see why not. Tubes and tube circuits are fascinating to me. It' crazy how virtually all other electronics have made them obsolete but in the music world, you'll never get that true tube sound without them. Now you got me fired up to revisit that stuff. I'm a guitar player myself and absolutely love the sound of my tube amps.

The Stewmac stuff is awesome, and they have great support when you need it.

I've built several, from kits on this page. They work well although some kits are a little expensive.
Tube Amp Kits
They are in Memphis and most of the tubes my audio equipment needs are bought through them as well.

Suggest the Fender 5F1 tweed champ circuit; kits are widely available

I'm kicking around the idea of a kit. But also interested in ground up "design" and build from scratch. I use design loosely as it would be based off another circuit, but I'd at least understand individual component selections and possibly tweak over time. Would likely just build the amp section in a chasis that I can run through my Blues Junior cabinet/speaker, so also don't need the full kit.
