I have a splitting maul. They work pretty well if you can put something in your swing - which she seems able to do. When we lived in Arkansas and I was many years younger, I used mine to split many cords of wood. Heating with firewood was great. You got plenty hot splitting it and then hot from the fire when you burned it, and finally hot cleaning out the fireplace insert.

I have never missed a fireplace after heating much of our house with one for ten years. We had an all electric "Gold Medallion" house in M. Home. I always said the gold medallion (electric company advertising scheme) on the front door was a Mark of the Plague.
