SIKORSKY S92
First introduced in 2004, the Sikorsky S92 is a 4-bladed, medium lift helicopter widely used in utility applications such as search and rescue and oil and gas worker transportation as well as military and a growing number of executive functions. Over 200 S92 helicopters have been produced to date with each basic model costing around $32m.
Powered by two GE-CT7-8A turboshaft engines generating 31,000lbs of lift, the S92 is able to carry upto 16 passengers in VIP configuration and 19 in utility. It has a maximum take off weight of 12 tonnes with a cabin measuring 20ft long by 6ft 6 inches tall. The S92 is able to operate upto 14,000 ft and will cruise at a respectable 150 knots for just over 500 nautical miles. At maximum speed this helicopter will fly at 165 knots making it one of the fastest helicopters currently in commercial operation.
It is testimony to the quality of the S92 that Sikorsky have now secured a $1.2b contract to procure replacement helicopters for presidential duties. Designated the VH-92 and based on the S92 airframe, it is expected that the first aircraft will be on line in 2017. Initially awarded to a European consortium based on the EH101 helicopter, Sikorsky won the contract due to cost over-runs with the European manufacturer.
Used S92 helicopters in executive format sell for $25m whilst new S92’s can be purchased for around $32m.
