Has Townes ever received proper recognition. As Kristofferson said, he was the songwriter’s songwriter.

Toward the end, he was actually booked at The Maple Leaf with Irene and the Mikes. It was sad.

Toward the end

He was still making a hundred grand per year in royalties, while the Nashville Songwriter's association was sending out letters to members, asking for charitable donations for him.
There was also some type of benefit show for him almost every weekend in Nashville at the time.
I hope someday I can be so underrecognized.

“Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world, and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.” - Steve Earle

Although he has admitted he is embarrassed he said that

People who know music know. Who cares about the adulation of the masses? The masses worship garbage.

Funny thing, when I was young I used to hear people talk glowingly about TVZ. And I resented what I thought was pretentiousness. Well, it wasn't; he was an amazing songwriter. I do a LOT of Youtube deep dives into his music.

Didn’t Townes say “Steve would never make it past Dylan’s bodyguards” or something similar?

He's widely acknowledged as one of the greatest writers of country right up there with Hank. No one does sorrow better than those two.

I was lucky enough to see him at the Eureka Springs Auditorium in Eureka Springs, AR as part of the Ozark Folk Fest. I wish I could find an old billing, because I remember if being pretty stacked with like.. Peter Rowan, Doc Watson, Leo Keotke? and some others (though I saw a lot of shows in that building over the years... Taj, Willie, Iris, Prine, etc.. so I could be misrembering who was at that one).

Is he kinfolk with Ban Morrison?

In all seriousness, two of the best songwriters of the 20th century.

Townes great songs are surpassed by the number of “Drunk Townes” stories.

Appears he was a mess of an artist. Undeniable greatness but always had that Train(wreck) whistle in the background.

The lists of HOF artists who loved him is long though.

Townes Van Zandt?

I know he did a fairly decent cover of The Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers."
