Single game is this ^^
College kids who months earlier didn't know each other beat the most talented all-star professional team in the world. Imagine that in any other sport. The Soviets in hockey embarrassed other teams filled with pros. Not like that US team roster ended up being full of NHL all stars either. Wild disparity in talent, experience, and familiarity with teammates between those two teams.

1982 Chaminade over #1 ranked Virginia with Ralph Sampson 77-72 on the heels of Virginia beating #3 Georgetown 68-63 and the Phi Slama Jamma lineup of the #14 University of Houston 72-63.

Plus, the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" occurred not only during the height of the Cold War but at a time when the USA was experiencing a national "malaise" post Vietnam/Watergate with out of control inflation and the Iranians holding our countrymen hostage.
It was a HUGE boost to the Country's moral and helped usher in the Reagan era in the '80s.

It’s probably this.

Not mainstream but Larry Owings over Dan Gable in the college wrestling finals was a pretty big one...

The football bias is so evident here
No football game should be in the top 5 of biggest sports upsets ever
Honestly that's why Leicester is even bigger than Miracle on Ice - with every game the odds are more difficult
Football with the limited number of games and possession based nature of the sport creates more upsets, even in the college game
Any single elimination format like the NFL playoffs or the NCAA basketball tournament is ripe for upsets

UMBC over UVA
One that probably doesn't get talked about enough.
First and only time (to that point) a 16 seed beat a 1. It wasn't just that Virginia was a 1 seed. They had the best record in all of college basketball that season 30-2. They went 17-1 vs an ACC that got 9 teams into the tournament (20-1 if you count the ACC tournament). And not only did they get beat. They got blown out by 20 points!!

Stanford AT USC, I think it was like a 55 pt spread

It’s going to be this for some time. Just an unreal season. Almost everything else is a one game upset. Those are not uncommon. Winning a league that the same few teams dominate every year is really impressive.

Anyone who knows about Premier League Soccer should agree. Every week I was waiting for a letdown and this team never gave in.
Truly amazing season.

That's why 13-9 lingers in the public consciousness while the one you mentioned is relatively forgotten despite the larger point spread.
Also Dave Wannstedt willing his team to victory on crutches
