Rap talks about all the bad things that happen in the hood; will country ever follow suit?

I know this should probably be on tMusic Board, but I feel like the discussion on tOT would be more fun.
All this “small town” talk got me thinking. It’s been brought up many times about how rap music talks about murder, drugs, trap houses, carjacking, disrespecting women, etc. all which are fair criticisms. Country music, however, usually talks about how small towns are all filled with beautiful women in tight jeans and daisy dukes, jacked up trucks, cold beer, lake activities, bonfires, and make them sound like the greatest places on earth…and anybody from an ACTUAL small town can tell you that’s far from the truth.
I want to know when a country song is gonna talk about the things that actually happen in small towns. When are they gonna do a country song about methheads, domestic violence, meth lab explosions, run down trailer parks, cousin/girlfriends, Saturday night dinners at the gas station Subway, etc. Will we ever get some mainstream country music like that?
I’ll hang up and listen.

If you dig a little deeper than your local country radio station, this is exactly what country music talks about.

I actually think that Aldean’s a genius.
He created a somewhat
political/edgy song to gain controversy and get his name in the headlines.
That way, whether you like the song or not, people are giving his name clicks and checking out his merch.
I’m sure that he knows his base isn’t a bunch of Bernie supporters, so he also isn’t afraid to isolate those types.
Most likely profit motives with great success.

Who wants a country song about pickups that break down and meth?

Both styles of music are intended to keep the listeners exactly where they are in life and discourage upward mobility. Rap glorifies drugs and criminality, country glorifies alcohol and working a blue collar job in a small town until you die.

That's all been done.
Maybe not the explosions.

I doubt country will or has glorified the bad things, rather it laments them. Big difference.

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train

Colter Wall - Kate McCannon
The Louvin Brothers- Knoxville Girl
Waylon Jennings - Cedartown, Georgia
Marty Robbins - El Paso
Johnny Cash - The Long Black Veil
Willie Watson - Rock Salt and Nails (pick from 900 other covers of this one, but Willie's is one of my favorites)
These are just handfull of murder ballads. You can go to other topics that cover "bad things" and post more endless lists. Real life misery is ever-present in "country" music.

Legal poison is still poison.

Old song. Versions have been around maybe as early as the 1700s, probably earlier. It is hard to pinpoint the origins of real folk songs.

They sing and rap about what they’re proud about of.
It’s got nothing to dow with truth

Rap also talks about violence against LEO, women among others. (D)ifferent standards.
