I've never seen this occur as you describe it.
I definitely manage new hires at a level that would be considered "micromanaging" by more advanced second year staff, seniors, and supervisors. It's done in an encouraging way, and I'm doing it so they can learn how to actually create a good work product as well as learn how to be a professional.

Anyone deal with constantly thinking about whether or not you’ve done enough to keep the boss happy?

Think of it this way. If your boss.has nothing better to do than micromanage your work instead of focusing on their own, then you are more important than they are.

Cowboy up and quit being a pussy.

This is all you need to worry about.
I had a sales manager like this once. Lose his shite if I lost a deal. All I would do is point at the board where I was on top of the branch month after month.

for this reason, I almost never look at education on resumes I receive. However, I always look for an ex-athlete or a military person. I want someone that can handle some criticism and go back to work.
In other words, quit being a titty baby. if you are not confident in your actions/results, then you are the problem.

I never cared much for praise, but I hate being micromanaged. Once you know someone can do the job, leave them be.
You know you're doing good work. Keep doing that. Sounds like he'd be killing the golden goose if he ever got sideways with you, and I'm assuming his peers and superiors know about you and the work you do.

If you are that good at what you do just go to another company that has the same work values as you.

I finally changed jobs and it seems to be much better

It can be absolutely miserable working for a boss that is never happy and justifies their existence by micromanaging.
I had the worst of the worst when it comes to this. He was basically Patrick Bateman from American Psycho to the T. He was from NYC and was a former investment banker just like the character. He was every bit as shallow, pompous, and egocentric as Christian Bale in the movie. In fact, Patrick Bateman treated his secretary better than how my boss treated me.
Can't tell you how many times I've thought of leaving dog poo at his door step and to top it off with a chef's kiss, some on his car door handles as well, as I can easily look up his address online.
Of course on his $100,000 Porsche and whatever else he has.

Suppose I don’t need the praise. I could have left that part out. I am a natural encourager and have always found it easy to point out the best in people and recognize hard work. If you aren’t insecure about it, I don’t know why you wouldn’t recognize excellent work. Especially these days!
One thing I know I could do better is protect my mentality from the constant criticism over inconsequential things. I do find myself replaying conversations in my head in the drive home and ruminating over things before I fall asleep. Shouldn’t let that dude live rent free in my brain. Some days just wanna sock him though.
Again, I never worry about my position as I’m one of the most valuable parts of our company. If I were to be dismissed I could find work quickly. I love my job. Just hate who I work for.

Why does everyone expect praise to be part of their compensation package?

No, really. Get the frick out of that shitty company.

Leave. Soon. This douche sounds like the type that will sabotage you trying to get promoted. Life’s too short.
I had a boss like this. My problem is I have a temper and eventually I reach my limit and have a habit of spilling truth to people that aren’t prepared for it. He got a healthy dose of truth and wasn’t prepared for it. I left shortly thereafter. Company went out of business not too long after I left.
Dude was a bag of dicks. He called me on the day my daughter was born. He knew where I was. Then he started blowing up my phone texting me looking for a response while I was literally holding my newborn daughter. All for something he fricked up. a-hole.

Get a gub'mint job, there's no pressure or accountability and your boss doesn't care what you do, please he is likely scared of you.

You have a toxic boss, but I'm sure management loves them and they can do no wrong. These type of managers are the absolute worse.
Hang in there and look at the bigger picture, your family. Create your own file on your manager and when you argue keep’em on the defense.
I had the best manager I ever worked for once tell me that bad times never last, but neither do good times.

I cared about that stuff when I had a big house note. Now, frick it. I’m showing up and doing the best I can. If they don’t like it they can suck on these nuts.

I was one of only 200 or so telecommuters in an IT dept of several thousand for almost 20 years and was paranoid as frick the whole time over wanting to knock it out of the park every year so I wouldn’t have to move my family back out of state to the corp office (in an undesirable blue state, very far away).
Silver lining is having that hungry attitude helped me get several early promotions over the years.
Since Covid the whole department telecommutes now and I have less than 10 years left to retire, so now IDGAF.
Crazy what people do now that I would have never done Re answering the door or phone calls or have a dog barking etc. during meetings.
Different manager every couple of years so never had to put up with any ones shite for too long. Most of them weren’t that bad actually.
At least I got compensated for kicking arse, wife is a teacher (no pics) and also a real go getter but they all get the same shite raise or no raise regardless of performance.
