Have y’all heard it? It’s very common on the radio now.

Didn’t think I would like it so much. Not a fan of country music, but the rural sound and make voice really makes this work for me. I think it probably will resonate with people who may have once felt trapped in impoverished rural communities - which is probably a huge portion of this board.

And Combs has a heavyset, disheveled appearance and recorded the song when his voice was a bit tired. It has a surprisingly authentic vibe to it as a consequence - just like Chapman. So hits pretty damn hard, just like Chapman.

Looks like it’s climbing the charts really fast.

I’ve always liked Boyce Avenues’ cover of Fast Car.- much more stripped down version

Lukes version is fine but probably my least favorite of the 3 versions behind the original/Boyce Avenue and then his

Why can’t already famous people stop covering these amazing songs? It’s the exact same song with a country accent. Tim McGraw didn’t need to redo tiny dancer either. Nor did Morgan wallen with cover me up.

He should've made it into a legit country version... Plenty of places to throw in steel guitar and/or fiddle. All he did was make it sound like a karaoke version.

It’s garbage and is emblematic of the MASSIVE lack of originality in today’s songwriting and movies

My thoughts also. And I also hate when they change it to make it their own sound. Sure cover a song at your concert but don’t record it.
There are a few exceptions of course.

I laugh at all the rednecks around here who think it’s a Combs original.

At my nephews graduation party, my brother asked probably 15 kids if they knew who Tracy Chapman was and none of them knew. Kind of sad that most people probably think this is an original song of his.

The Black Pumas version is 10x better. This dude did absolutely nothing to make it his.

This. And it's precisely what the artist intended on happening. And precisely why it sucks. I'm surprised Tracy gave permission to record/market it.

Originally thought that too but music is meant to be shared. I don’t have an issue with new audiences being exposed to them

Don’t believe you have to give permission to cover a song.

Saw an 8 hr playlist of covers of Fast Car on Spotify- I’ve cut out all the club mixes and piano versions to this acoustic guitar playlist

Acoustic Fast Car covers

Black Pumas
Probably the best cover with the shimmering capoed up Fenders

Very unlikely she owns it.

Then cover it at your concert. Don’t get into a studio and record the exact same song but spending even more on production to try and make it even more produced and radio friendly. Announce the original artist, and then cover it at the show. I think wallen has begun to think he wrote cover me up.

Artists covering songs have been prevalent in music for as long as they have been recording music. Very few major artists have not covered a song.

I think there’s a difference when a famous artist that really hasn’t put out anything that could be considered “good” songwriting. Then records someone else’s masterpiece and gets more popular for it. Fast car would probably be the best written song of his catalogue if Luke Combs actually wrote it. Same with cover me up. When your best song is someone else’s and not a lot of people know, it’s annoying.

If Tracy still owns it, she's thanking him all the way to the bank and cashing some nice checks.

It’s behind a paywall, but Billboard says that Tracy does own the rights and, as of a month ago, she’d made over $500,000 in royalties from Combs’s cover.
