I never did either, but only because we couldn't afford it. As an adult, we checked our kids out of school a half dozen years for vacations. I think our kids missed 10-12 days a year for various family related reasons, especially pre-high school.

Now that they are grown, I don't have a dog in this fight but I would've hated year round school. Some of that is because I'm just a traditionalist but they loved going to the grandparents for two weeks each summer and we loved to travel with them as well.

Yeah I think the idea of summer break is so ingrained into my generation and the ones before and after that I can’t wrap my head around it not existing anymore

We’ve already had a blast since Sun God Jr finished school in May and I’m legitimately bummed that he has to go back to school in a month

Probably never had my butt plugged as thoroughly as yours, between the heroin and prison and whatnot

I don’t know about 4 days school weeks but we need to stop letting women run our éructation system. They’re fricking atrocious at it.

Yes, they get breaks in the cold months, but those tend to absorb their parents already granted days off with trips to the in-laws for the holidays. Would be nice to have two hard weeks off in October/January that you could plan a trip to I don’t know… Acadia National park. Something different that is difficult under the current protocol.

Not to mention my first point of the lapse in learning over the summer months. It’s not all about the vacations.

Thank you. And honestly, I literally thought that out zero. I could have taken a few minutes, gathered myself, and made a much more logical and convincing argument. But I’ve seen these threads enough to know it would have fallen on deaf ears. That’s why I avoid 99% of them. There’s no changing minds, there’s just more preaching to the choir. But the biggest damn shame of it all, is I AM THE ONE YOU WANT TO BE TEACHING YOUR KIDS. I loved it, and I was good at it. Like I’m sure you and shutter and the other few upvoters of my post are or would be.

But the overwhelming attitudes in threads like these combined with the bi-monthly occurrences they rear their ugly, ignorant heads, have violently pushed me away from that profession. It’s just not worth it. Which again, I just want to point out, makes all this a self-fulfilling prophecy. Guess what? Demonizing teachers gets you demon teachers. How can parents not see the yin to that yang would be revering the profession would attract teachers worth of reverence?

Whatever. This thread caught me in a mood and for whatever reason, elicited a response. I’m sure it’s just pissing in the wind like all my previous ones, and everybody will eventually stagger into their predetermined corners, armed with their preconceived and unchangeable opinions, fingers planted firmly in ears, blissfully and willingly ignorant to the tiniest bit of nuance of the other side. Like everything else. Mere exercises in futility. shite.

That’s certainly a fair point about the relearning required after summer break

Kids never seem awake. Stretches of inactivity that disengage the learning. Holidays disrupting what could be productive days.

Things like that.

Never looked super deep, but have heard about timing for kids and their natural rhythm for learning blah blah

I think we all appreciate good/great teachers here, but only the worst examples really get talked about which is definitely shitty

My parents couldn’t have afforded it either.

I can afford it now though, problem is the time off revolves around going to the in-laws/my parents which gets old.

Exactly.

Most of teachers' work happens outside of the classroom. It's not like they teach for 8 hours and are done for the day.

there needs to be a merit based system with goals and incentives.

the classes where children are learning because of great teaching, pay those teachers more. let those teachers and even the students have extra (earned) time off.

underperforming? stay in school until you learn.

the Randi Weingarten's of the world need to go.

It’s not the teachers that suck, it’s the administrators.
