The "Grunge" bands were from Seattle. STP was from San Diego. But if someone insists on lumping them in with the Seattle bands, I'd rank them behind all 4 of the big bands from Seattle.

And you would be mistaken.
I’ll give you Alice and Soundgarden, but STP’s far more dynamic and listenable than Pearl Jam or Nirvana, in my view. STP toyed with styles and textures; the other acts were one trick ponies and always so glum.

Nirvana was the biggest of the bands from Seattle. Pearl Jam has outlasted all of them.
STP was among the first of the bands to try to jump on the Seattle bands coattails. They are not Grunge.

I really disagree with this. Nirvana had this raw energy that none of the other grunge bands beside Soundgarden could ever even come close to matching. Pearl Jam wrote better, catchier songs than STP. STP isn’t a bad band by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re clearly behind the other 4 big grunge bands in my opinion.
I sometimes wonder “what if?” Chester Bennington hadn’t died. The single they released with him was absolute fiya. They looked poised for a big come back.
