Was There Ever a Year You Felt This Franchise Was Hopeless

For me, it had to be between the years of 1995 and 1999 when the Falcons were constantly beating our arse. Dark Times indeed. Also, we had guys like Andre Hastings and Mario Bates on the roster. Alex Molden, Rob Kelley, Kerry Collins, etc...

1967-1985
You could see Mora was going to win here.

No. There is always a chance.

Yes almost every year prior to Jim Finks becoming GM. Hopeless may be a bit strong for some years in there but we just constantly lost it was a very long period and although fun time not a hell of a lot to cheer about.

From 1967-1984. We all thought maybe something good could happen when Hank Stram took over in 76 but he went 4-10 then 3-11 (to that point the saints had never won more than 5 games in a season).
In 78 Dick Nolan took over and had the two best seasons in franchise history 7-9, then 8-8 (the Saints lone non-losing season until Bum Phillips in 83) then went 1-15 in 1980.
We were ecstatic when Bum took the helm in 1981 but by 1985 he was done.
In 1984, however, the real problem with the Saints was rectified when Tom Benson put a group together to purchase the Saints from owner John Mecom Jr., who was one of the worst owners of any sporting franchise IMO.
Since then, I have not ever felt like the team was destined to fail.

After the River City Relay I lost all hope. I found that no matter WHAT we did great, we would screw it up in the end. Even when Drew came in, I was like, what a waste of talent to show up in NO with this team.

The Katrina season was damn depressing and hopeless both with the on-field product and the San Antonio rumors.

Tom Benson and Jim Finks ran this organization into the ground after a few decent years following the ownership change.
Ownership changed in 1986.
Saints made the playoffs in 1987, 1990, 1991, and 1992.
And went 0-4.
From after 1992, til the 2006 season, the Saints made the playoffs a grand total of ONE season.
Thats ONE PLAYOFF appearance in 13 seasons. In an era of free agency. Thanks Benson!
The only time I ever almost gave up on this team was the last 2-3 Haslett years. Those we were the absolute worst for me.
Not that the teams were horrible, it was the cluelessness from head coaching staff to GM and owner.

Bum Phillips first gave me hope. I recall a 10-0 win over the Bears that was a thing of defensive beauty.

Not sure who else is my age. I’m 37.
My earliest memories were Bobby Hebert and the Saints being good. Then , for the lion’sshare of elementary, middle school, and high school; I had to endure ridicule for being a Saints fan. Majority of those around me were cowboy fans. KMSS FOX33 can kiss my arse from years of showing cowboys over the Saints.
7-9 was considered not bad.
So many almosts and what ifs.
Then, 2005 off season into 2006
Freshman year of college. Everything changed.
What a run…
We did have a lot more heart ache in the playoffs during that time. But we’ve been. Force in the NFL for quite a while

went to the Browns-Saints game with my stepdad in 1999.
Saints led the whole game and the browns scored on a hail mary on the last play. A Tipped pass in the endzone.
We picked that game to go to because... you might have guessed it... felt like we'd win that one.
On the drive home I remember feeling like what's the point?
Then the next week I think we were playing the Giants on the road, and they scored on the last play of the first half on a hail mary.
And you might could have guessed but that pass was also deflected in the endzone.

Last year and this year
I wouldn’t say I’m completely hopeless about this year because going into a season with Jameis Winston and Derek Carr is altogether different.
That said, I do feel like people have a ton of false confidence about this team lead by Allen and Carr.

The game was blacked out on TV so CBS was showing some other game instead. That game finished early so they switched over to the Saints just in time for the end.

oh man Terrific!
I remember having a bad feeling watching that ball sail in the air but it could have been just any other game watching it on TV where you felt the same thing.
That game is why I rant the way I do sometimes still today.
