Going Aug 4-8th for couple days before school starts. Will be wife, me, 10 yr old and in laws. Looking for good hotel that can work as good base. We might be going to see a concert at the Rady Shell near Jacobs park.
Will go to zoo with one day and midway for sure. We like good food and beer. Thanks.

I'll be there around same time with my family
Chose the Hyatt Mission Bay for first two days (points and close to Seaworld) then the Hotel del Coronado
Pricey but I'm hoping the location pays off with younger kids

Gaslamp is, likely, what you'll be looking for. If I'm in San Diego for work, I usually stay at Hilton right next to Petco. Close to your music venue and easy access to 5 for the zoo and North Park, where a lot of breweries are. Pure Project and North Park have Balboa Park locations, but I prefer their spots in North Park - Pure Project's space is awesome.

Stayed at the US Grant Hotel near Gaslamp in 2019. Highly recommend.

Stayed at the Omni next to Petco a few years ago. Nice hotel and easy to get around the city.

Check out the Manchester grand Hyatt
It’s a nice hotel in a great location. Easy walk to gas lamp, petco

I was at Loews Coronado last week and would say the same. Seems like you have quite a few good options OP.

I'd recommend Davanti's in Little Italy.
My family and I just got back from staying 5 nights in La Jolla and stayed at the Grand Colonial. La Jolla is awesome and worth checking out or even consider staying. Duke's, George's, Puesto, Eddie V's, The Taco Stand, Marisi are a handful of places we ate and all were good.
If you go to Coronado, I'd check out The Henry. We ate there for brunch, and it was really good.

I'm in San Diego a good bit for work and have been here with family for vacation a few times before. Manchester Grand Hyatt, Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, or the Hilton San Diego Bayfront are my go to. Easy walk to anything in the Gaslamp district. San Diego hotel pricing is crazy high, so if budget is a concern look into areas like Mission Hill or Mission Valley. All a very short drive back to downtown, but the proximity of the first few hotels I listed make walking the Gaslamp district much more convenient.
Make sure to speak a day in Coronado as well. Great restaurants and a really good downtown area to walk as well.
