They started a wildfire instead

An important part of the conference will focus on Indigenous cultural fire practices. Weather permitting, participants will also take part in a prescribed burn at Compound Meadows adjacent to the Banff townsite.
Banff assesses the damage left by out of control fire
quote:
A burned and blackened forest smolders on the shoulders of Banff’s townsite, as ribbons of light smoke wrap around scorched trees now on the verge of toppling onto the side of the road.
Fire crews put out hotspots and the unmistakable rattle of chainsaws echoed nearby. Overhead, helicopters long lining buckets of water take turn dousing trouble areas.
On Wednesday a prescribed burn project in Banff National Park got out of control and jumped the road, threatening a cemetery, horse corrals an event tent and a resort hotel. Hundreds of people were evacuated including an estimated 10 horses.

What a shame. It’s so beautiful there

Well, well...if it isn't the consequences of my own actions

That's a pretty good sign that they should have had a controlled burn a while ago.

I always figure if my wife starts a grease fire while I'm away, the house is probably gone pecan.

To make matters worse, it took them two hours to get ready and they got lost on their way.

Not really. The reports are the weather wasn't favorable for a CB but the women went ahead with it anyway despite the wind.

I guess the good news is it only cost 83% as much to put it out.

Is there a reason why activist women (like Melinda Gates) are so obsessed with Invading every space? Not by merit, but by quotas?
They dominate college degrees over men and they just keep marching on to dominate other areas.

A properly maintained forest area won't burn like that even if conditions aren't great if it has been maintained.
And if we want to go keeping score, men were involved with a controlled burn in New Mexico last year. That fire wound up becoming the largest wildfire in state history.

Someone tried to mansplain the weather report to them.

I’m no expert in forestry, but if the OP’s pictures are from the burn mentioned, it doesn’t look like a healthy burning of undergrowth.

what are the odds they were all too busy texting or on FB to keep an eye on the fire, expecting that surely someone else must be watching it?

Exactly. There was too much undergrowth buildup. If it had been managed properly (it rarely ever is on public/fed land) it doesn't get that out of control.
ETA: It is about to get even harder to maintain state and federal forests via prescribed burns thanks to the EPA and their lowering the thresholds in the Clean Air Act. The EPA will now have to approve most any prescribed burn of any size.
