Lack of time and desire have brought my playing days to an end. I have two violins that I would rather sell than sit in a closet. Both likely need some work and I want to get them appraised to see if this effort is worth my while.

Who/where in Baton Rouge area can do this? My first thought was the LSU school of music and/or the BR Symphony. Better ideas welcomed.

TIA

I'm no expert, but from what I've always heard, if they are violins it would probably be worth your while, if they are fiddles, maybe not.
I remember the first time I was looking at a fiddle at our best acoustic instrument store, which is named The Fret Shop. I asked, "what's the difference between a fiddle and a violin?"
Immediate answer: "About a million bucks."

SOLA in Lafayette will be your best option. They are honest and can answer all your questions. They may even have a consignment option.

I finally made time to visit SOLA. I spent the better part of an hour there with Anya while she evaluated the instruments and gave her opinion on what could be done at a price in line with their value. I have no doubt she will get my old fiddles in playing condition again.

I told how I came across her shop and she was quite amused and appreciative for the referral.

Thank you!

The name on the label says Joseph Guarnerius, but per SOLA it's a German reproduction.

If it were the real deal I'd be on my own private island right now...
