I never understood the whole “they love power” thing until I watched “Succession”

Possibly SPOILER ALERT about HBO Max “Succession”
I’ve always heard the term “money can’t buy happiness” and my thought has always been “Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure as hell helps”
Anyways, I started watching Succession - which I love by the way
This show has to be pretty damn close to the real thing in Politics, Wall Street, Big Businesses and Hollywood elites”
This family (keep in mind I know that this show is not real life, so no need to DV me thinking that I think this show is real life)
- SPOILER ALERT -
The Roy family was offered $500 BILLION dollars to sell their media empire and the family could not/would not sell it because they loved having all of that power over money and happiness.
It seemed to me that they had very stressful jobs but they would rather have all of that stress, work 24/7, etc. to running that business instead of banking $500 BILLION dollars where they could have retired rich as balls and never have to work again in their lives.
This fricking family was so addicted to being powerful figures in the world (while backstabbing other family members) that they turned down $500 BILLION dollars.
This is where I think Succession is pretty realistic with real life:
So when you see politics, sports athletes, celebrities, etc. doing their shite on TV, on the field, or at a capital…. it’s not about what they are doing, who they are doing things for (their constituents) or money. It’s because they love having the power over little people like us (The Peasants)
You look at all of these 75-85-95 year old washed up fossils still trying to chase that first high they got when peasants were obsessed with them back in their hay days.
You see athletes trying to play until they are 40, politicians trying to run for positions when they are 84 fricking years old, celebrities continuously starring in Reality Shows because they are so addicted to the power that they would do anything to keep that power. It’s pretty fricking sickening to be honest with you.
It’s just crazy to me that when these elite people become rich that they are scared to live the peasant life because they are scared to death that they will someday be a peasant and lose all of that power.
This is why the elite hang out with the elite and they ALL work together to control us peasants.

This post is ludicrously capacious

Power is why politicians won’t give up an elected office unless they are somehow forced out. Doesn’t matter whether it’s Congress or a lowly police juror. Nobody is kissing the ring unless you are in a position to help them out.

Where did this number come from? I think their take would be more like $20 billion for their Wayco stake. The kids were already billionaires, power is more meaningful than money to people who can already buy anything they want. I get what you're saying though

The episode I just watched… Logan said he thinks they can get 500 (I actually rewound it to double check after he said it)

Your numbers are way off. Logan says at one point that if they sold, the family would clear 9 billion. The entire sale would be more but that would be their stake.
In any case, you’re correct. If I was one of his kids I’d make Billy Madison look like a hard worker.

Tried hard to like this show. Just couldn’t. Not a fan.

1 billion, 5 billion, 10 billion. Still that’s a lot of money for a family. I thought he said 500
I look at Mark Walhburg for example
The dude takes on so many new jobs whether acting, business, etc. what’s the point? He’s never going to spend or give away all the money he has already made. Why not just settle down and relax instead of always being stressed and balls to the wall for 24/7? The dude works incredibly hard 24 hours/day

This is my 4th attempt at trying to watch it and it hooked me this time. Every time I tried it before I turned it off

You never understood power until you watched a drama series?

Taking worldview cues from Hollywood.
That's a mouth-breather move

Honestly, 90% when the kids have dialog you can skip it.

Didn't read the whole post... but "Succession" was an awesome series.

Why would you throw athletes in there? They don’t play until they’re 40 because they like power over little people. They play until they’re 40 because they love the game.

None of the kids in succession do any actual work for the company, they all just pretend to

So you didn't realize that people love power until you watched an HBO show. How old are you?

It is also why most adults will run themselves ragged trying to worm their way into middle management....the money might be better but the bull shite is infinitely thicker...but power over even a single person is a helluva drug for most people....

Never saw the appeal while in management.
