Y’all do realize the more of our roster that jumps in the portal the better right?
The addition by subtraction logic does not apply with Waders. We really sucked last year, but should be keeping every player..

It’s weird, there are two competing thoughts:
1. Rats jumping a sinking ship
2. We need a roster overhaul so it makes sense

This is how everyone knows you don't know anything about this sport or rules that apply. Last year, the NCAA put in place more strict transfer rules to prevent kids from jumping from program to program.
Once you transfer to another school, you will either have to sit a year or graduate before transferring to another. This applies to the majority of our team. Just stop.
What the hell does that have to do with potentially having to replace 7-9 players this year?
Also means it was easier for MM to fill out a roster last year than it will be this year.
ETA. This “new rule” didn’t stop Coleman and Hill from leaving. It also wouldn’t stop Wilkinson, Phillips, Ward or Reed from transferring, on top of the 4 that have already bolted and KJ.
In fact there are only 4 players left on the roster that came here by way of transfer.

Very strange Will Wade complex you've got going on here. Let me tell you what, If I give you his cell number will you never post again?
ETA: Cell number as in phone number, not jail cell.

Seems like you’re the one with the Wade complex

You just don’t know ball, specifically LSU basketball. That’s ok, but quit acting like you do

It would only apply to the following:
Miller
Coleman
Hill
Hannibal
Fountain
Hayes
Technically that is only 6 of the 13 scholarship players from this past season (considering KJ Williams is out of eligibility). It also doesn't apply to grad transfers. Hill and Hannibal just finished their 4th seasons of college basketball. I don't know if they are on pace to graduate this spring or summer. Given that Hill and Coleman both would presumably need a waiver to be eligible next season (if they aren't grad students), they must feel reasonably confident they will be eligible to play next season despite the NCAA rule.
As of now, Hill and Coleman are in the portal from that list. Justice Williams and C. Williams (Jesus, was LSU's team a Williams family reunion last year?) are as well. That is 5 players leaving once you add KJ. So while that is obviously not 9 new players, the number is continuing to increase. I could see a point where LSU has to replace 7 (maybe more) guys considering there are 4 more players who can transfer without penalty (Wilkinson + the 3 Freshmen).
That's why the "he had to replace his whole roster!" excuse never really carried much weight. That's the reality of college basketball today. While bringing in 9 new players is probably on the high end of the curve, it's not uncommon to see teams having to bring in 7-8 new players. Alabama had 8 players from last year's team leave. They brought in 7 new players (3 transfers; 4 HS signees). Arkansas had 10 players to replace from last year's team.
The reality of college basketball is coaches are essentially have to largely rebuild teams year after year. The coaches who will be successful are the ones who can do it year after year. The one's who can't won't find consistent success.

Are we going to see a similar exodus of players to last year?
Just sad at this point.

I can get behind a keyboard and type too. Have developed many D1 college basketball players, I don't need validation from this board or you. I've yet to see any real basketball posts from you and you're approaching 150,000 posts. Educate me on "ball" baw.

I don't think so. We're getting close to the rumored number of guys that would be leaving. May already be there.

He was hired on March 21st last year. It’s March 23rd today and all he’s done is lose players so your little narrative that he didn’t have time to build a roster last year is now gone.

Probably not quite to that degree

It is, but not because 5 players are in the portal. That's, unfortunately, college basketball in 2023. Multi-year starters on good teams transfer these days. Power conf. coaches should expect to have to replace at least 5 players at the end of each season. That is the current landscape of the sport. And if done correctly, the transfer market can completely change the trajectory of the program in one season (see Kansas St this season)

I agree with you that this is the landscape of college basketball but I was more referring to there is nothing to be excited about with our Basketball program right now. That is what I meant by its just sad at this point...

Hopefully, Phillips, Ward and Reed stay. They should definitely be recruited to stay. And Fountain. The guard play was horrible and needs to be upgraded.
As far as portal pickups. McMahon should start here:
Jameer Nelson Jr.

The only players staying are the ones who would have to sit if they left. Any grad or first time transfer is likely gone.

In a strange way, if you believe the biggest reason for this past season was a poor roster then news of guys entering the portal creates a reason for optimism.
(I don't subscribe to that notion. But if you are searching for glimmers of hope, that's about all you have)

I am in no way disagreeing with you that McMahon has to do way better constructing and coaching the roster.
I would note that last year was a bit different in that he did not have a staff in place nor time at LSU to develop natural relationships with players that would not choose Murray State but might choose LSU. So the two situations are a bit different.
Now, the problem is that the recruiting facially doesn't look like what will be necessary to win here. I think the problems from last year are much different than those that appear to be cropping up this year. He's had over a year at LSU, it should be starting to come together.
My concern is we might win 6 games next year if we improve dramatically, and we'll all have to stomach the propaganda machine pushing the idea that it is moving in the right direction despite the fact that it takes monumental incompetence to only win 2 conference games. Winning six conference games should be, at the outset, deemed a failure for next year no matter what.
