Avoided a massive round of layoffs today

First time going through that. Company had a meeting today and said if you didn’t receive a calendar invitation within an hour, you weren’t part of the layoffs.
Glad how it ended, but it’s a reminder of how expendable employers view their employees. Don’t get me wrong, I know there is a bottom line and that’s how the business continues to grow, but man what a wake up call that company loyalty isn’t a two way street.

My company did them last month. I didn’t get laid off but I got three times the territory for the same pay…
Husband got laid off today. It’s happening everywhere.

It’s happened to me before. Laid off an entire division that was doing well. Decided to divest the products and sell to other investors. From my experience, these things usually happen on Thursday mornings. And calendar invites to certain people with HR invited—titled “organizational update” or “project future”. One thing I’ve learned is no matter how valuable, how well you’re doing, how we are a “work family”…. You’re just a number and they’ll happily chop your head off without blinking an eye.

Survived them in 2008-2009 in the financial industry. Wasn't fun

This is why I keep my resume updated and my LinkedIn contacts in the loop. I'm always looking for a better job with more pay and benefits so I don't have any loyalty to them either although it is a pretty sweet gig for now. Never can get too comfortable though.

Capitalism baby.
Capitalism is responsible for the largest middle class in history. The richest in poverty class in history. The smallest % of people in poverty in history. The largest wealth generation in history.
There is no better alternative to capitalism, nor will there ever be.

Same. First time for him. One month severance which is ghetto for this company. Laid off/cut 30 total positions out of nowhere today.
Luckily he was seeing the instability in management the last few months and has been interviewing, so hopefully he will have something in the next month.
Still stings for anyone when it happens.

You're an attorney. You know exactly how billable you have been over the last several months to a year.
Few professions know their exact value to their employer as an attorney does to a law firm.

But the unemployment rate is at record lows, how can this be?

I blame millenials for the lack of company loyalty these days. If y’all would stay on for 40 years like boomers y’all would be family but instead y’all jump from job to job every couple years so how can y’all blame the company?

ALL over the country including employees loyal for over a decade and at mid to upper management too.

Loyalty has gone the way of common sense.
