I don't think it was commotio cordis. CC is caused by a sharp blow of a fast moving object with a relatively small cross-section (baseball, hockey puck) so the impact is focused on one point. A football helmet or shoulder pad is going to strike with a much larger, flatter surface with the energy distributed over a much larger area. Plus, that hit wasn't overly violent by NFL standards. It just doesn't add up to me.

Incorrect. I've previously posted the data from the CC National Registry. It is usually caused by a ball or puck but not always and has been caused in football games and other non-ball blows to the chest.
