Great Egg Scam of 2023

I just got back from a local chain grocery store. White large Eggs were 5.29, extra large 5.99, and Jumbo 6.59 for the store brand.
But the brown cage free eggs were only 4.49 a dozen for the store brand.
Usually, brown or cage free eggs are more expensive.
So folks look around before just grabbing the usual carton of eggs.
I am about order a few chickens to cut out the middle man to lay my own eggs.

A guy at work told me his wife is convinced the brown eggs are fertilized and she won’t eat them

Wasn’t there a good many large chicken farms burned recently? This could be a possibility why eggs have hiked through the roof. I don’t know. I’m asking the question.

Back in the day you cracked the egg into a separate bowl to make sure it wasn’t an embryo.
Also, aren’t all eggs fertilized?
ETA. Googled it. Apparently not.

They had a rooster issue in the last two years and had to bring in new chickens for breeding. Then there was a big outbreak of avian flu in the Midwest.

Not sure about arson but Avian flu put a hurting on chickens in the last few years.

The worst outbreak of avian influenza on record is threatening to stretch into a second year, as the U.S. races to contain a virus that has already caused some food prices to soar amid a shortage of eggs.
Nearly 58 million birds from commercial and backyard flocks have been wiped out in the U.S. since last February, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

This is what I've understood to be the main driver of the current increase. What's crazy is we don't seem to have a shortage of eggs. At least not where we normally shop, anyway.

I’m getting 10-12 eggs a day lately. Chickens are awesome.

One of my favorite Archie Bunker quotes happened when Edith fixed tongue for supper. Archie says ‘I ain’t eating nothing that came out of a cow’s mouth. Give me a hard boiled egg.’

I bought sixty eggs for 20$ at the Walmarks the other day. That was the cheapest per egg. Now I got to eat all these eggs.

There is no better time to buy eggs from local farmers. No bird flu flock eradications for them.

Yep, chickens are fun. Ours our just now getting laying age and we have a few that are sick and not laying while we treat them.
Today:
2 silkie eggs
2 americauna eggs
1 copper maran egg
We have 18 hens and 2 roosters. Only 7 hens are laying.
How many do you have?
