What are the best trades to get into today?

I have a relative who I am trying to convince him and his parents to look into going the trade route instead of the now more traditional 4 year university route, but his parents seem hell-bent on him going to college, which for him seems like a square peg in a round hole. School and academic pursuits are not his strength.

Tried getting a plumber lately? I would say they can basically name their price these days.

Electric.
Do a 4 year apprenticeship and get paid, no student loan and middle class income when you start your career as a journeyman.
Other trade may fade, electrical techs will continue to grow as tech grows.

I see plenty of HVAC trucks out and about. But if you want to get into a trade with high demand and little competition, you’d do well as either a plumber or a welder. In fact, of the two, I’d say plumber is the one trade above all others that seems to be the most scarce nowadays.

This everyday and Sunday - which btw earns double time.
Build up a little residential/light commercial service plumbing biz and you're pretty much set for life.

My stepson is going the trade route. His mom wanted him to go to college, and he is certainly smart enough, it just wasn't what he wanted. So he joined the National Guard. Spent some time overseas. He is back now and is still a weekend warrior, but he learned to weld and I now have him in a plant. The goal is for him to get hired on by the plant instead of being a contractor like myself. He is young, the benefits are outstanding and the dude will make a great living and have a fantastic retirement.

Any trade will pay off. Electricians, plumbers, and good carpenters can make a really good living.
Of those 3, I would choose the latter, because the first two can work in some awful conditions, especially plumbers.

I heard some baw at the boat ramp tell another baw’s son that if he became a diesel mechanic he could write his own ticket. That’s all I got.

All the trades are a good option. Boomers are retiring and there’s not enough gen x to meet demand. Gen y and z don’t want to do that kind of work. My son is in welding school. There’s already people coming in to look at their welds and talk to the instructor. He’s gotten some compliments from those people, he’ll probably have offers waiting for him when he graduates.

Why are you trying to convince someone to do something you’re unsure about?

The answer has always been instrumentation
